What the Critics Say

"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." (AudioFile magazine)

"Starts off good, then gets hard"

The idea of the Pimsleur courses is that you do 1 30-minute lesson each day. In general, you should be able to do each lesson once, though sometimes you might need a repeat. For this Croatian course, the first lesson was great and I didn't have to repeat it. For the second and third units, I had to repeat them a couple times each. The fourth unit I had to repeat about 4 times, and it took me about 8 times (!!) to do the fifth unit. The fifth unit really has way too much material, especially since part of it requires some really weird sounds that are not in the English language. They could have easily made the fifth lesson 3 separate lessons. So this was my only gripe, and I'm hoping it doesn't get worse in units 6-10 (which I haven't gotten to yet). If it wasn't for how hard the last unit was, I would have given these first 5 units 5 stars.

Otherwise, I really like the Pimsleur method. My friend is Croatian, and after I used a few expressions on him that I learned from this course, he said my accent was really good. That is the biggest compliment you can give a language course. I feel like this course forces me to say things the correct way, especially since the learning is purely aural and you are completely detached from how the words look. That being said, it might be nice to have some accompanying guide with the phrases written down since, if you are serious about learning Croatian, you are eventually going to have to read and write it. And sometimes you see patterns more easily when reading words rather than listening to them.
