©1997 Living Language
I have used Living Language courses before and had always found them helpful. Unfortunately, however, this program was not nearly as useful as I had hoped. I chose this audiobook over Pimsleur, Idiot's Guide etc. because it sounded like it had a faster pace, and the voices were comparably pleasant. But after listening to the program twice, I wanted to provide a warning about some problems I had with this particular course.
First of all, the way they organized the lessons was absurd. Instead of devoting a lesson to greetings, another to numbers/days of the week etc., they would throw everything together to the point where no discernible organization was apparent. You would literally get a lesson in which they would say "hello, good evening, boat, three, and the verb 'to drive'". It was very irritating.
My second complaint is that they spoke too much French! Within 10 minutes I was becoming irritated because they would surround the word that they had just explained to you with too much conversation that you didn't understand yet.
My last complaint is the speed of the speaking. While I liked the pace at which they introduced new words, the words were spoken too quickly. I realize that this is how people talk in real life, but when you are first familiarizing yourself with a language it is difficult if they speak so quickly that you can't pick up their enunciation or understand where one word ends and the next begins.
The best way to teach languages remains a mystery, unsolved by this program. I love languages but hated this. A waste. I hope that I good one comes along. Let me know if it does but don't waste your time with this one.
