Editorial reviews

Aprilyne Pike's debut, Wings, is the first in a saga that follows Laurel, a high school girl who's coming-of-age story differs from most girls her age when she discovers her true self; she's a fairie! This blend of teen drama and supernatural fantasy presents its own universe with a unique take on fairie folk that will intrigue young listeners. In her performance, Mandy Siegfried sets the tone of the series blending confusion, wonder, and burgeoning romance as Laurel's identity grows and she must choose between the fairie and human in herself and in potential boyfriends.

Publisher's summary

Laurel was mesmerized, staring at the pale things with wide eyes. They were terrifyingly beautiful - too beautiful for words. Laurel turned to the mirror again, her eyes on the hovering petals that floated beside her head. They looked almost like wings.

In this extraordinary tale of magic and intrigue, romance and danger, everything you thought you knew about faeries will be changed forever.

Critic reviews

"Fine escapist fare, this neatly mixes the everyday with the otherworldly." (Booklist)
"In the current crop of supernatural romances, this one stands out. Silky narration...delicious escapism." (Kirkus Reviews)

Twilight...with fairies

Not sure what to say here. It reads like a lighter take on Twilight. I did not like that book, so I do not enjoy this one. There is some potential with the story, but it definitely was written for the tween set. Apparently Miley Cyrus is tapped to play the lead character in the movie version of this novel. If you like Hannah Montana I am sure you will like this.

One of my favorite books

Love the story. It takes you imagination to another world. I'm just not a big fan of the voices of the characters sometimes.

Could have been better

There were parts of the story I really enjoyed, and others that were just sappy and very unrealistic! It could have used a lot more action. Some of the voices were decent but the bad guys voice was done horribly. I will definitely be reading the next one not listening to it.

Good book for teens

I’m not a teen but it’s also a good book if you want a fantasy book with no bad language and no sex. Yes it’s still interesting just not vulgar.
It’s a bit like a light version of Harry Potter book 1.

finished because I am a completionist

The premise was good which is why I picked it up, but the twists and turns were very predictable. I was hoping to love it, and would have if I had not expected it to be more indepth. The characters were difficult for me to care about and the main character at times was pretty"dumb" when it came to life and choices. I struggled to finish it and was glad when it ended. If I wasn't hoping so desperately that it would get better, I would have stopped listening after the first hour.
This book is good for a quicker read without having to focus fully on it. The plot was not deep and the characters were predictable. If you like a little romance that is "clean and innocent", this is a cute story.

meh.

Definitely more for preteens. the plot was kind of unorganized and the characters are over developed too quickly making them boring. the narrator does a good job capturing her character, however her character is naive and point of view kind of stunted. Also she pronounce ylang ylang wrong and that wouldn't matter to me usually, but that's the biggest impression she made on me.

There's some action which is good, but somethings in the plot don't make sense (SPOILER ALERT: An example is it takes weeks for Laurel to even accept the thought she is a fairy even without any other explanation, and her parents take hardly any time to wonder why or how a bunch of fairies gave her a big ass diamond to save their old land.)

have to listen to the whole series as I am book trading but really hope things get better.
