Bruised and battered, Jared, Simon, and Mallory return home to find their home ransacked and learn that Mulgarath has made off with their mother and Spiderwick's Guide. With only the help of Thimbletack, Hogsqueal, and Byron, the Grace kids have to defeat Mulgarath and his goblin army. But they have to rescue Arthur Spiderwick from Lorengorn and the elves first.
Don't miss more stories in the Spiderwick Chronicles.

Don't you just love a great story well told?
I had to listen to this book to see how it compared to the film. Indeed, if you have seen the movie then by all means get the book(s). Because several key things have been changed. Well written and well narrated.
The Spiderwick Chronicles are a fun series, aimed for the younger set but not in such a way that older listeners will be put off (no wishing for sudden deafness here!). I would recommend buying volumes one and two and "The Wrath of Mulgarath" at the same time and listening to them in all together. Otherwise it has the feeling of a serial instead of a finished story.
As a Lecturer in the Teaching of Literacy, I believe that the heart of learning to read is the love of stories... A love that has no end.
Having finished the entire series now, we were sad the story had come to an end.
Well written and well read, this twisting tale of adventure kept my boys and I well occupied during many mornings stuck in traffic.
Like the previous books in the series, this one is well done and has excellent narration. It continues in the darker style of the second volume, so some mild violence, gore. But I really like the way the story wraps up. Throughout the series, Jared has been struggling with anger issues over his parents divorce, and in addition to vanquishing Mulgarath, those have to be vanquished as well. I liked that the authors didn't choose the uneasy, unrealistic solution (think of The Parent Trap) where kids problems are fixed by reuniting their parents - who clearly had reasons to split in the first place, Instead, Jared's experiences teach him to redefine family and to appreciate those around him. It was very positive. And I enjoyed the fate of Mulgarath as well.
After listening to all five books, I was glad that something finally happens that is worthwhile. I am not so sure anyone else would have the patience though to hang in there for five books. If you like fantasy or adventure, there are so many better choices. My favorites are Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches and Chronicles of Narnia.
