Penguin presents a brand-new recording of Roald Dahl's classic The Witches, read by Miranda Richardson.
The Witches have a motto: One child a week is 52 a year. Squish them and squiggle them and make them disappear. The Grand High Witch of All the World is the scariest of the lot, but one boy and the grandmother he adores have a plan to get rid of the witches for good.

"Really good to listen to"
I would defiantly recommend this. its perfect to listen to on long journeys, and reminds you of your childhood with Dahl.
When the cook chops off the end of the tail of the young boy who is now a mouse.
when the boy told his grandma that he was happy that he wouldn't have a long life as a mouse because he didn't want to live without her.
If you want something to listen to that's nice and easy this is it. I would say that sometimes Miranda voice is hard to understand when she is the high grand witch but besides that its brilliant.
"Terrible grand high witch"
Love this story we decided to listen to on a recent car journey. Had to turn it off in the end due to the incomprehensible shouting voice of the grand high witch.
Great book!!! I can imagine it happening.
It is very ,very well written.
I loved it.
"Excellent read out loud to kids"
Kids loved the grand high vvitch getting her just desserts. We had a lot of fun with triumph over disaster in the nick of time.
"great story spoilt by sound quality "
This listening experience was spoilt by constantly having to turn volume up and down due to poor mixing!
"brings back memorys it's like the film enjoyed :-)"
loved it !! it was like watching the movie again brought back memorys !! very good
"Always a treat to listen to Roald Dahl"
If the audio downloads weren't so expensive I'd happily buy more books to listen to.
"book infinitely better than the adapted film"
Gripping tale for the young and old alike. Richardson performed all of the character voices well (I especially liked her Norwegian accent for the grandmother's character). Considering what some other reviewers had said, thought I might find it difficult to understand what the grand high witch says (due to loud raspy character voice), however save for a word or two, I heard and understood her perfectly well. We have to remember that the grand high witch has a foreign English accent! Must emphasise how much better and more detailed this unabridged (1983) book version is than than the 1990 movie of the same name and slightly different plot.
"Wonderful story for children"
I loved this book as a child and when i was ill recently i decided to listen to it again and it was actually very enjoyable
Very descriptive and exciting
the narrator did an excellent job of setting the scene which i imagine would be fantastic for the younger listeners
she did the different voices very well
I loved this . Richardson was great , the story is gripping to the very last minute .
I loved the sound effects ! And the music is sooo cool!😀 highly recommended for all kids
