Publisher's summary

Coming soon! A new HBO series, His Dark Materials, based on Pullman’s books.

The spellbinding sequel to The Golden Compass, the modern fantasy classic that Entertainment Weekly named an "All-Time Greatest Novel" and Newsweek hailed as a "Top 100 Book of All Time", continues the epic adventure, catapulting listeners between worlds and toward a devastating discovery.

Lost in a new world, Lyra finds Will - a boy on the run, a murderer - a worthy and welcome ally. For this is a world where soul-eating Specters stalk the streets and witches share the skies with troops of angels.

Each is searching - Lyra for the meaning of Dark Matter, Will for his missing father - but what they find instead is a deadly secret, a knife of untold power. And neither Lyra nor Will suspects how tightly their lives, their loves, their destinies are bound together...until they are split apart.

A number one New York Times best seller.

Published in 40 countries.

“Just as quick-moving and unputdownable as The Golden Compass.... The mysteries deepen and the wonders grow even more extravagant.” (The Washington Post)

“Pullman’s imagination soars.... A literary rollercoaster ride you won’t want to miss.” (The Boston Globe)

“The story gallops with ferocious momentum.... Devilishly inventive.” (The New York Times Book Review)

A mixed quality production of a solid, albeit exposition heavy sequel

The second book in the series relies a bit too heavily on exposition for my tastes, but it moves the story along well enough. I find it odd how quickly people accept things that should shatter their conceptions of the nature of reality, but it is genre fiction. I guess that comes with the territory.

The music on the chapter breaks is god awful. I like atonality, but this is downright arbitrary.

Quick and enjoyable story

Good sequel to the Golden compass. The reading is made more enjoyable by having a cast of readers to personalize each character.

Great story

The first book is narrated slowly but very interesting. The second book has a much better pace and the story is every bit as enthralling as book 1.

Great narration to a great story

This is a fun series to listen to and watch. I only wish they didn’t yell or get loud bursts especially when I’m listening to this as I fall asleep

I've long loved this series

I purchased this long ago for a road trip with my then middle-school aged sons. I re-listened in anticipation for the HBO series based on the book. The Subtle Knife is a fabulous middle story, introducing a key character to Lyra's adventure as well as building the world and the stakes for everyone involved. I wish the final book was as good as the first two.

interesting, I wonder what happens last

watched three movie, and the 2 seasons on HBO. thought I'd give the books a try. I like it. it's still got a lot of WTF moments. I would not understand the direction things were going and assumed wrongly more than once.
good story, keeps you interested. explains things I didn't understand clearly in the tv show. that's always welcome. I recommend the series.
now on to last book in trilogy. without a clue as to what's actually going to happen. lots I'm looking forward to getting to the bottom of.
