Publisher's Summary

Less than half a year ago, Tony and I received a mysterious note from Jared, Simon, and Mallory Grace, three children who have experienced authentic encounters with the beings we call faeries. As hard as it was for us to believe, we came to see that there was no alternative explanation. Now, putting aside personal concerns, we bring their stories to you.

In Lucinda's Secret, things at the Spiderwick estate are getting out of hand. If being attacked by a band of marauding goblins and almost eaten by a bridge troll wasn't enough, now Jared is being harrassed by Thimbletack, the house boggart, and Simon has a very hungry griffin recuperating in the carriage house. Mallory is convinced that the only way to stop the madness is to chuck the Guide. But that's not an option. Only one person can help solve this mystery, their crazy old Aunt Lucinda.

In The Ironwood Tree, the entire faerie world is eager to get their hands on Spiderwick's Guide, but why? And will the Grace kids be left alone now that the Guide has mysteriously disappeared? To make matters even worse, now Mallory has vanished and something foul in the water is killing off all the plants and animals for miles around. And the faerie world's abuzz with the news that a creature with plans to rule the world has offered them a gift to join with him: he's given them a queen.

Don't miss more stories in the Spiderwick Chronicles.

    Story
    "fun"

The Spiderwick Chronicles are a fun series, aimed for the younger set but not in such a way that older listeners will be put off (no wishing for sudden deafness here!). I would recommend buying volumes one and two and "The Wrath of Mulgarath" at the same time and listening to them in all together. Otherwise it has the feeling of a serial instead of a finished story.

Likes: Cozy mysteries, esp w/cats, books on workings of the brain/autism, not-too-dark fantasy. Dislikes: Animal cruelty, torture scenes.

    Story
"It gets darker in this installment"
    Any additional comments?

All of the Spiderwick Chronicles are well done and worth reading, and all have good narration. This volume contains books 3 and 4. In Book 3 Lucinda's Secret the story gets darker and more complex. We meet one of my favorite characters, Lucinda Spiderwick. Book 4 The Ironwood Tree is my least favorite of the 5. Here we encounter the Dwarves, and there are several aspects of this story that I don’t like. I don’t like people/creatures able to look like other people and I don’t like the Dwarves’ desire to obliterate all living things and replace them with artificial things. These I realize are my own quirky hang ups but they are why I liked that book less. Again nothing is wrapped up. It is all just leading us to book 5 for the (worthwhile) conclusion.

    Story
"Skips the story? Not appropriate for younger kids?"

This volume does not pick up where Vol. 1 left off. There seems to be a whole story missing, even though Vol. 1 has books 1 and 2. This story is also much darker than the first volume. My 6 year old loves scary stories, but this is too dark for her, definitely. Had to remove it from her playlist. Also, one of the child characters, Marissa, portrays snotty, bratty, jaded behavior that my 6 year old decided to mimic - parents beware! I would advise that parents listen to this prior to giving it to younger children and make your own decision on whether it is appropriate for your child. (Which I should have done myself! Ooops!)

"Not Quite the Same as the Film"

I had to listen to this book to see how it compared to the film. Indeed, if you have seen the movie then by all means get the book. Because several key things have been changed. Well written and well narrated.

    "Not much happens"

Not much happens and overall humdrum. If you are looking for fantasy or adventure, there are so many better choices. A few I would recommend are Journey Beyond the Beyond and Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches. Then continue on to In the Service of Dragons and Chronicles of Narnia.
