"Nancy's resourcefulness and intelligence are just as sharp today, and Laura Linney gives a good portrait of the clever, earnest girl." (AudioFile)
What fun...to re-discover Nancy Drew after devouring every Nancy Drew book almost 35 years ago. Please Audible....obtain more of them for our listening pleasure! The narrator was very good and the musical interludes were so remnicent of the era and excitement of the story line.....great job.
I loved the Nancy Drew series as a youngster, and it was so enjoyable to revisit the books so many years later. The narrator, Laura Linney, has a wonderful voice and provides a highly entertaining imitation of voices and inflections throughout the story. In addition, there is a noir style of music interlaced throughout the story, which lends a more sinister ambience as you follow the adventure!
Nancy is my favorite character, of course, but I've always enjoyed most of the characters in all of the Nancy Drew mysteries.
The first 34 Nancy Drew mysteries contained 25 chapters; they were later revised down to 20 chapters. While I prefer the original versions of the first 34 books and wish those were available in audio format, I still thoroughly enjoyed listening to this version.
When I was about 9 years old I fell in love with Nancy Drew. We share the same name. She is my first mystery heroine and the Secret of the Old Clock was the first of thousands of mystery novels I have read over the years. Ms. Linney does a wonderful performance of bringing Nancy to life. Nancy drives her little sports car and goes to luncheon with her friends. She is brave and cleaver and a good helpful person.
My six year old daughter and I enjoyed this listen. We were drawn into the suspense of the plot and the parallel between solving the mystery and Nancy's honest, loyal self prevailing over greed. She's a good, clean role model of cleverness and perserverance, despite some dated elements of the story. Laura Linney's a perfect reader too.
This book is great for preteenage kids. It is a shorter audible book than others. It has all the same intrigue and adventure Nancy Drew gave to me when I was younger reading the same stories in hardback. She still proves to be a great heroine. It is very well narrated and if you have ever read any of Keene's books provides great visuals as well. I recommend this to all of those girls out there that always loved a good mystery.
I never read Nancy Drew books growing up (I'm 42) but I had always been curious about them. I thought the audiobooks were a fun way to get to know them, especially with Laura Linney as the narrator. It's true that the writing is quite old-fashioned and not so "politically correct" as another reviewer mentioned, but I found it to be charmingly quaint, not offensive. I was surprisingly absorbed by the twists and turns of the plot. I cannot say enough about Laura Linney! She is wonderful. Overall, this was a fantastic light & easy listen.
On a lark, I reread this as a 63 year-old because it was such a favorite when I was about 8 or 9. I couldn't believe how much I enjoyed this re-read. Of course this is not "good" literature and like all the Nancy Drew books I read as a child is formulaic. Unfortunately, I don't think my daughter would want her daughter reading these books, simply because they are not "good" literature. However, I couldn't believe how exciting it was today as it was back then. I couldn't put it down. I liked the simplicity and yet the plot at the same time. It sparkled for me and not just from bringing back memories of childhood. Of course, it's a quick read. I don't think there is anything wrong with getting a reluctant reader to get hooked on these. Nancy Drew hooked me on reading more than any other books and I can imagine younger girls today might want to devour them as I did back in the early 60's.
Our book group listened to this just for old times sake. It was one of our best discussions ever. We are all of a "certain age" and all of us read the whole series when we were young. It brought back so many memories. Some members took it on themselves to read several versions of this book through the years (including 1930 and 1959 and possibly 1991). It was very interesting to see all of the changes Nancy made thru the years, from a nice high school girl in a roadster to a college girl in a convertible. If you think about it, Nancy was the original girl superhero in 1930 showing her as confident, smart, and not dependent on a man to save her.
I was brought up on Nancy Drew. So loved the story. Also I really like Laura Linney's reading style. Wish there were more books in the series available (read by the same narrator.)
Reminded me of my teenage yester years.
The story is light and heart warming. Oh how I miss the good old Nancy Drew mysteries.
