Featured Article: Misery—Book vs. the Movie

In the pantheon of adaptations of the works of Stephen King, of which there are literally dozens, there is one that stands out at the top: Misery, the 1990 film directed by Rob Reiner, starring James Caan and Kathy Bates. The movie still holds the distinct honor of being the only adaptation of a Stephen King book to win an Oscar. That accolade went to Kathy Bates, who won an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her show-stopping portrayal of Annie Wilkes. Bates also won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture: Drama for her shattering performance.

Like it but don't like it

It is not the best I like reading better. I like it because I do not have to read it

As good as the movie

I was told the book was so different from the movie, and I should be prepared to not like it - but I found i truly enjoyed the entire thing. It helped that the reader was so animated.

Good to listen to.

I enjoyed listening to this audio book and it makes me want to watch the movie again. Rob did a good job reading (and directing). Having watched the movie fist, I could imagine some off the scenes and characters.

Please listen!

If you grew up loving the movie then you will adore the audiobook. You get a deeper description for scenes and the remake you'll direct in your head as Mr. Reiner reads it to you will bring a new love to an old favorite.

Great Stuff

I confess, having watched the movie first, there are many points of difference here. That said, this is a great work very much worthy of the time for any fans of the film, or for first-timers. I would definitely recommend reading/listening to this first before watching the movie though. The overall effect would be much more satisfying.

A worthwhile read even if you watched the movie

There are many differences from the movie, and in many ways they show favorably on the movie, but for a story told succinctly, yet with nuance, this is exemplary.

A classic

Buttercup is a girl that lives on a farm and loves bossing around a farm boy named Westley. Shortly after she realizes that she does love him, he went to go get riches. She gets news that he dies and it destroys her. After a few years the prince of the land finds her and convinces her that they need to marry and that it doesn't have to be about love. On a ride that she takes everyday she gets kidnapped and overhears that the kidnappers plan on killing her in order to start a war. A man in black comes to her rescue. After a few turns of events she finds out that this scary man in black is her beloved Westley. Buttercup and Westley try to escape and get caught by the prince, after being killed by the prince its just a simple thing of Westley coming back to life and rescuing Buttercup from the prince to live happy ever after.

I have always loved the movie so why it took me so long to listen/read this book is beyond me. They made this version of the book remind me a lot of the movie. I will read the whole book down the line of course. The whole time I was listening to this book I could see the movie in my head. The dedication Westley has for Buttercup has always brought me joy, and been a dream to have in my own life.

The voice was good for the story. He read it in such a way that he made me feel like he was in the room reading it to me instead of just a recording. He brought the story to life in such a way that it is hard to describe. I'm hoping to find the not abridged version and hear or read that one and see the differences.
