Along with Wit, Charm, Health, and Courage, Princess Amy of Phantasmorania receives a special fairy christening gift: Ordinariness. Unlike her six beautiful sisters, she has brown hair and freckles, and would rather have adventures than play the harp, embroider tapestries . . . or become a Queen. When her royal parents try to marry her off, Amy runs away and, because she's so ordinary, easily becomes the 14th assistant kitchen maid at a neighboring palace. And there…much to everyone's surprise…she meets a prince just as ordinary (and special) as she is!

My 8 year old listened to this book - it seemed to be riveting for her. She didn't want to put it down and listened to it constantly, through dinner, on our walk, riding in the car, and even lying in bed before lights out. Only books like The Secret Garden, A Wind in the Door, and Anne of Green Gables have elicited a similar listening intensity for her. My daughter is eagerly awaiting the next children's book from M.M. Kaye. Narration is vital for children's audiobook versions and from listening to this preview I immediately appreciated Simone Tetrault's lyrical voice and pleasant reading pace.
I love this story. It is a beautiful telling of what would happen if a princess was an ordinary girl. I liked listening to the story but the hard copy version has illustrations that really make the book.
I stumbled upon this book at a local library when I was young. I was enchanted by the beautiful illustrations and the story. It is just a sweet and simple fairy tale but it captures my imagination now as it did then. I am so happy to see an audio version of it. The reader is perfect.
I can be summed up in one word. Handsome, intelligent, honest, humble, brave, exciting, fun, kind, trustworthy, sexy! All these words work.
I like books that adults and children can share. This was not one of them. There is not a lot of depth. It's a simple story. Good for little girls and for building self-esteem.
I loved this story as a child, and enjoyed it again this time.
The narrator isn't very good. She speaks way too slowly, and in a sing-song tone of voice.
I ordered this book for my 8-year-old daughter. The book is well written and narrated. I love that the main character is not the typical fairy tail princess. We have listened to the book twice already! I'm so happy that she enjoyed her first listen, just hope I can get her brother into something he would enjoy as much as her.
