I hope, for your sake, that you have not chosen to listen to this audiobook because you are in the mood for a pleasant experience. If this is the case, I advise you to put it down instantaneously, because of all the volumes describing the unhappy lives of the Baudelaire orphans, this might be the unhappiest yet.
Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire are sent to Paltryville to work in a lumbermill, and they find disaster and misfortune lurking behind every log. These include, I'm sorry to inform you, such unpleasantries as a giant pincher machine, a bad casserole, a man with a cloud of smoke where his head should be, a hypnotist, a terrible accident resulting in injury, and coupons.
I have promised to record the entire history of these three poor children, but you haven't, so if you prefer stories that are more heartwarming, please feel free to make another selection.
With all due respect,

"Funniest book in the series? Could be!"
In this, the 4th book in the series the familair formula takes a short holiday. The villianous Count Olaf makes a late and failry under stated arrival, which allows room for the staff and owner of the lumber mill setting to occupy the fore ground for most of the story. This is all for the best as it makes way for some brilliant character comedy. There is a lot of clever verbal humour that will make smart kids (and any adults dumb enough to buy a children's book) laugh and laugh. I myself am a dumb adult and I laughed many times.
The plot is the usual dark tale of orphans in dire peril and it features the most exciting climatic confrontation in the series so far.
I should add that if you've seen the Jim Carrey movie of the first 3 books then this is the next story to listen to. You will pick it up perfectly well with out having read it's predecessors.
