Publisher's summary

Once, in a house on Egypt Street, there lived a china rabbit named Edward Tulane. The rabbit was very pleased with himself, and for good reason: He was owned by a girl named Abilene, who treated him with the utmost care and adored him completely.

And then, one day, he was lost.

Kate DiCamillo takes us on an extraordinary journey, from the depths of the ocean to the net of a fisherman, from the top of a garbage heap to the fireside of a hoboes' camp, from the bedside of an ailing child to the bustling streets of Memphis. And along the way, we are shown a true miracle, that even a heart of the most breakable kind can learn to love, to lose, and to love again.

Critic reviews

"This achingly beautiful story shows a true master of writing at her very best." (Publishers Weekly)

Editor's Pick

Difficult protagonists are my favorite protagonists
"This is the title that got me into children’s literature, beginning my decade-long career in the wonderful world of kidlit. Edward, the book’s protagonist, is a difficult one: a cherished but spoiled toy to an affluent young girl. As a result, he hasn’t experienced much beyond his privileged existence. But then he’s sent careening into the wider world, carried from one harrowing or bittersweet experience to another, until he emerges as a wiser and kinder version of himself. I believe most listeners will emerge from this listening experience similarly."

Emotional and heartfelt story

I listened with my 9, 7, 6 and 4 year old children. All were engaged and interested and wanted to listen again when it was finished. I cried multiple times. Which I didn’t expect to do! Incredibly well written and narrated.

Crying

I had the near out of body experience of listening to this gut-wrenching book while I had a fever after a Covid booster. This is an out of this world story that cracked my heart open.

Great book, almost made me cry.

Back in 2008-2009 I was assigned this book in elementary school to do a book report. I had just came to the US so I did not understand. Now that I'm fluent in english, fast-forward in 2020 I started using this app and one time I looked up the PDF and listened while I read along and it was great. November 2023 I was doing yard work and decided to listen and almost cried again.
I bought this book translated to spanish and gave it to my uncle to read (audible doesn't have the spanish version). He speaks understands english but struggles to speak or read it so hopefully he enjoys it as much as I did.

Granddaughter loves -listen over & over

So many life lessons delivered it is hard to list them all. My 10 year old granddaughter has started pointing them out as we listen. She wants me to listen with her so she can talk about what she is hearing. That was a big surprise. I think this book has reached her at several levels. Pure enjoyment for the story - interest in sharing what it makes her think about and a desire to read more complex stories.
I plan to look for more books like this for her and encourage her to get young friends to read them with her. Like to see her start her own book club - build friendships and knowledge all at the same time.
