SET REVIEWS TO BE SORTED BY 'MOST RECENT' INSTEAD OF 'MOST HELPFUL'!
My 3-year-old grandson, who loves this book when we read it aloud to him, immediately turned away from the sound of this narrator's voice and protested "Turn it off, Grandma!" Despite the narrator allegedly being female, his/her reading voice when not doing a specific character is a very grating, exaggerated-sounding old man voice, kind of like Robin Williams doing an impersonation of a very elderly and edentulous Ronald Reagan or the Mayor of Munchkinland in The Wizard of Oz.
Nonetheless, even if the toddler was repulsed, this is one of my favorite children's stories so I listened to the end, and was impressed all over again by the timeless message of this unendingly inspirational tale. Also, I discovered that the narrator's voice is an acquired taste, kind of like green olives. S/he is actually very good, and has a very versatile voice with so wide a range that if you didn't know better, you'd swear s/he was actually several different readers.
Special note to all the listeners who posted negative reviews stating their disappointment that the book has no pages to turn, that nothing moves, and that there are no illustrations: That's because Auible books are just audiobooks, not apps. You want to purchase The Little Engine That Could app, available in the App Store from Penguin Group USA. It's only $3.99 and it's fabulous; the original illustrations you loved as a child are all there, but now animated, and the words of the good, kind little blue engine appear in the smoke coming out of her smokestack as she chugs up and over the mountainside.
I'm an adult, so first and foremost is that it's 7 minutes long. Having said that, this book is an inspirational masterpiece bang for buck that can't be matched. Where else are you going to get this good of content for 7 minutes of your time?
LOL! Yes. I think I could manage to set aside 7 minutes of my day for this one.
If you suck at life, it's ok. You don't have to. Baby steps.
It starts with your attitude.
You must believe in yourself even when you think believing in yourself is unrealistic. If you think believing in yourself is unrealistic, fake it! I know, I know.... You don't want to lie to yourself, but answer this one question. What good is it doing you being honest with yourself? You're still miserable, so why not try something different. Do a little work for once, and maybe, just maybe you'll start feeling better about yourself. You have a choice. You can do nothing with yourself, and stay miserable, or you can put a little effort into your life and discover things about yourself you never knew existed.
Your attitude dictates EVERYTHING! Think you can!
This children's book is not just for kids. From time to time, when I am feeling down, I listen to this audio. This book brings a smile to my face. Next time I feel down, I remember that if the Little Engine could make it up that hill, so can I. My guess is this audio plays well for children. However, I am 50 years old, and the Little Engine always brings a smile to my face. I cannot think of a better motivational book turned audio for children of all ages.Excellent purchase!
I am an educated Southerner, plowing through books at the speed of light. I love good stories, good coffee, and good conversation.
I loved this book as a child, and my kids love it too! I put it on my daughter's MP3 player and let her listen to this and other stories when she cannot sleep. It always seems to relax her and help her get to sleep.
I have always loved loved this story and now my 5 year old does to. The storyteller did an amazing job...my son listened listened to it over and over again.
My 2.5 year old loves to listen to this one in the car. Other good stories he likes are The Gruffalo, The Gruffalo's Child, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Llama, Llama Red Pajama.
This telling of the Little Engine story has fascinated my son who has autism and loves trains many times. The narrator has a fun voice and makes the story endearing and exciting! I would love to find more audibles like this one!
It's very cute! Recommended for car rides
It's a little short, but you can burn a CD of multiple of them for a car ride, which works well to keep kids quiet. ;)
The kids loved listening to the story but I wish you could follow along with the book pages as you are with other books. I want to do this to encourage reading and comprehension in my young reader.
I live in CA where the traffic is a nightmare. It could take 90 mins to get to my location when it should have only taken 25 mins. Audible!
This is one of the greatest of all moral lessons about not giving up. If you haven't ever read this story, you have to buy it in hardback and perhaps try this one on audio. Just know if you do the narration is a little flat.
"Excellent Little Engine That Could"
A lovely short story for children.
Nicely read by the narrator & uses character voice for the engine.
