As Omri struggles to balance his real life in England with the characters of the Wild West of 18th century America, his incredible adventures are a fantasy beyond his wildest imagination.

"The best children's book of the year." (The New York Times)
"Ms. Banks has a riveting expressive contralto voice." (School Library Journal)
I loved this book. Really, really well narrated in my opinion. Using this story to introduce my children to audio books. Plus, I don't mind listening to it again (and again, as kids are wont to do).
We started this on a trip, and had to figure out how to listen at home as they went to bed.
Finally got them to turn it off 1 hour after normal lights out.
Next morning we are woken to the sound of the author reading... they figured it out themselves!
The sound quailty is great, the story is great. 8 year old loved it, 5 year old found it a bit long and didn't listen to it all.
I loved it!
My third grade class listened to the audio book while following along in their own books. They LOVED it! The author's British accent made the whole experience that much better! One day, I had them vote whether they wanted me to read it or listen to the audiobook and the vote was overwhelmingly against me!!
When Omri takes the "figures" to school with him, my class was hanging on every word! The author does a very good job of describing the event so that my students felt like they were there.
I've not listened to any of her other books. She does a great job with this one, though.
The only reason that I gave four instead of five stars for this review is that the author was reading a slightly different version that the one we had.
Exciting, Engaging, CLEAN!!
It has a continuing flow that draws you into the book, you just can't quit listening!!
One of the best family books we have read so far.
The kids loved how the Indian pronounced words...
All 4 of my children LOVE this audiobook and have listened to it over and over again. This is such an endearing story, and even big kids like me can enter into this world with great pleasure! Linda Redgrave does an incredible job of narrating. I just can't say, "So enjoyable," enough! Now, if only Audible would do the next book in Banks' series - we are waiting!
This is the second recording by this author/narrator my son and I have listened to together. She is amazing: great voice, great sense of timing. I wish Audible carried more books by her.
My 8 year old was entranced by this book as was I. The naration was great. Perfect solution when I'm too tired to read to him at night. We snuggle together to listen to Audible stories. Thank you!
We downloaded this book as one of several to enjoy on a 7,000-mile, one month long road trip. My six year old son absolutely loved this book and listened to it 3 times back to back. We are back home now and have listened to it at least 3 more times since. Messages are imaginative play, friendship and compassion.
I have run a book club for more than a decade but never have time to read anymore- I listen while I cook/clean/fold laundry!
This book has been banned by some schools and libraries. The author is British and did not know very much about Native Americans before writing the book. Some of her descriptions may even be inaccurate. But Banks' whole point, through magical, child-like storytelling, is that we have to respect everyone, regardless of differences in race, size, or time period. "Intent" should be considered more heavily by critics of this work.
