"Laura Linney transports the listener into the thick of the action....For longtime Drew fans, the mystery unfolds with satisfying regularity. For new listeners, Linney brings an immediacy and a freshness that keep the listener at Nancy's side as she solves another mystery." (AudioFile)
I purchased this audible book for my 8,6, and 4 year old grandchildren and I to listen to on a long trip. They loved it! I had to keep checking to see if they were asleep because they were so quiet. I learned just how interested they were when I turned the book off during heavy traffic, so I could concentrate more on my driving. They began playing, quarreling, and doing all the things they normally would do had we not been listening to the book. As soon as we returned to the car after a stop, they were all telling me to turn their book back on.
The reader did a awesome job of changing voices with the characters. She really made it seem as if we were seeing the performance in person with lots of different actors.
Although the book was originally written for young teens or pre-teens even before I was born, it was still enjoyable for an old lady of 60 like me as well as my grandchildren. I would definitely recommend it to others.
It is one of the first in the famous old series, and yet pretty complex. Not all fluff. Stuff to get into. The "very old friend" - ness of it, is what brings me back.
I'd run to the library as a girl to get the next book in the series. I had to sit with myself, to work out a reading schedule that prevented me from obsessing on Nancy Drew books.
I read every one available at the time.
Then in highschool I re-read the rewritten series, updated it to get rid of stereotypes and racist things. My best friend owned the entire collection, so it was a bit easier. My friends and I made 4 and we'd go on "adventures" inspired by Nancy Drew, in addition to our busy family, school and dating things.
I still want a blue roadster, and I DID manage to wangle from Dad a cool Hillman Minx in two-tone grey.
As a Mother of grown children I could recommend it to them and now to grandchildren, and that's part of the magic.
"Chimneys" I think in Agatha Christie's collection for Miss Marple....because of the long lost knowledge Idea and the hidden passageways...not the best one but it will do here.
Nancy...I think Laura Linney IS Nancy Drew. And I think she took the job for love of Nancy Drew! Hugs to her for it.
I like it when the capture of the "perps" results in benefits to the "good guys" , suffering in some way. At the end, The aunties no longer need to sell the estate, etc...fun...to close with a nice feeling and promise of another mystery to come ...soon.
Please make the Nancy Drew /Hardy Boys purchases easier for us at Audible - compared to the other books they are a bit costly - when most older children and adults read them by the dozen - rarely one at a time.
Please Make them available in a group at a special price, and call me - I'll buy them all.
Yes, b/c Nancy Drew books are like comfort food for our overly-worked, now-adult brains.
Love me a good haunted house story...
I wish Laura Linney would narrate the rest of the series. I also wish she would teach a master class to others on how to narrate.
I loved Nancy Drew as a child and read every book I could get my hands on. Listening to this one again took me back to a simpler time. I have to say I still found the story very enjoyable. Fast moving and full of detail and suspense. Great listen for a fan!
I read so many Nancy Drew books as a child and loved every one of them. At least once a year I buy one on Ebay or Amazon and read it for pure enjoyment. This format is great fun. I listed to the stories in my car and at night. Thanks for having this series on Audible.com.
Laura did a fantastic job reading this title. She made the story come to life with her emotional style of reading. She was good at creating different voice for the characters so that one did not become confused as to whom was speaking, and she read the dramatic parts a bit more quickly, as one would do naturally while reading it themselves.
Nancy of course! She's so clever, yet still maintains elements of being a teenage girl,so that she does not seem too old for her character.
I would not recommend listening to this in chapters before bed. The cliffhangers might make you lie awake.
This is a very hard book to listen to. I like Laura Linney as an actress, but this book sounds very monotone without any character or feel to the reading. There is sadly nothing nice to say about listening (or trying to listen as i gave up). If i could return it i would. Definitely not worth a credit.
in every way
couldn't listen long enough to tell you
