When a baby escapes a murderer intent on killing the entire family, who would have thought it would find safety and security in the local graveyard?
Brought up by the resident ghosts, ghouls and spectres, Bod has an eccentric childhood learning about life from the dead. But for Bod there is also the danger of the murderer still looking for him - after all, he is the last remaining member of the family.
A stunningly original novel deftly constructed over eight chapters, featuring every second year of Bod's life, from babyhood to adolescence. Will Bod survive to be a man?

"Thrilling, elegant and joyously macabre. You will love it to death." (Holly Black, author of The Spiderwick Chronicles)
A fantastic story with lovely detailed characters, full of surprises. That Neil Gaiman himself narrates the story is definitely a bonus. Loved it and could not stop listening till the end
This was my first adult audio book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I also really liked the narrator, what a surprise that it was the author himself. There are few authors that could pull that off. I hope he narrates other author's books and more of his own. The story was interesting, flowed well and kept me listening.
One of the greatest things about this book is that Neil Gaiman does the narration. There is nothing better than hearing an author read his or her own work. The story is good fun, nothing complex. Each chapter is a mini story that fits into the overall story line making it easy to listen to over time - you can finish a chapter then come back a few days later and not forget where you're up to in the story. It's a children's book, which I didn't realise until after purchase, and listening to it before going to sleep reminded me of when I was young and my parents would read to us kids one chapter of a book before bed. Worth the credit if you're after something light and fun.
The Graveyard Book was a delight to listen to from start to finish. So rarely do I come across a book that grips me from the start --- but this did. It definitely is for the younger audiences but even those young at heart (I'm 34) can enjoy this as well. The author can have a second career as a narrator. He was simply brilliant and shone the characters in their proper light.
A riveting, fantastic story.
But what makes this audiobook so special is Neil Gaiman's utterly spellbinding narration. He brings life to each character in turn and draws you in further with each breath.
My only problem with the narration is that it makes most other narrators sound rather mundane and ordinary. A true story teller, telling a story how it should be told.
Not all stories are remembered long after hearing them, but the insights this one has will ensure I keep going back to it.
I felt quite sad, like leaving an old friend, when I knew I was coming to the end.
It must surely become a classic, with its slowly revealed plot and its individual moral tales.
Listening to the story read by the author makes this even more special.
Anything I try to write as as review seems trite. Suffice it to say I applauded in the wines and spirits aisle of asda when the story (via headphones) was complete.
"Loved this! "
Really enjoyed it! Great story but also loved Neil Gaiman's witty narration. Sometimes the narrator can spoil the story but this was just perfect!
"excellent book and excellent performance"
brilliant story. Neil Gaiman is a genius. I could see older children loving this. What a brilliant concept, having the child brought up by so many characters from different parts of history and different types of being, not just the ghosts. The writing is witty and light hearted but still gets the story and messages across without needing to labour the point. excellent.
Hard to say, it's out there on it's own but is so entertaining and has so many nice little touches I could easily take time to listen to this in one go. It's totally original and fresh and like nothing else. the characters are all so well written and entertaining
Silas and Miss Lupescu but every character is brought to life individually with such skill they are easy to recognise. Loved the way Miss Lupescu was introduced and the strange appearance of the big grey dog before the reveal about who she is. When I guessed it was like a lightbulb moment and so funny..
Raising the dead has never been such fun.
Really pleased by the lack of fear about death or difference. the main character is different and happy to be as it gives him strengths and experiences others miss. Even the characters in the graveyard who are supposed to be a bit sinister like the witch are taken at face value without looking through eyes of fear and shown to just be different as well but there being nothing wrong with that.
Great story and loved the characters...a tale of life and how to embrace it...Silus is a guardian we all need
"A really super book."
I really enjoyed this, book, I had approached it tentatively as I had not enjoyed a previous Neil Gaiman novel.
I really liked the characters in this book, and the story was brilliant.
This was indeed a very pleasant surprise, nicely written and narrated by Neil Gaiman
Awesome book beautifully narrated original story Thoroughly recommended especially if you enjoy the strange & unusual.
"Too good to be limited to children."
This is the third Neil Gaiman book I've listened to and it did not disappoint. Read by the author himself who has the perfect voice for a modern myth maker. In the pages of this book are encapsulated life lessons for both children and parents. And perhaps the fundamental lesson that prophecy becomes self fulfilling if one makes the mistake of believing in one. An excellent read that I only wish I could have read to my daughter when she was a child.
The characters are drawn with a light and yet detailed hand.
His voice is perfect for a good spooky tale.
Yes, I had to force myself to turn it off at half two in the morning.
Looking forward to more of Mr Gaiman's work.
Don't have time to read books so listen to them in the car and on the train. This is a great way to enjoy books over an over again. This one I will listen to again as it is fun an well narrated.
Loved his other books American gods and neverwhere.
Always a great narrator and has one of the best voices for audiobooks. This compares well to his others.
this child wAs never seen or heard unless he wanted to be.
I've listened to this audiobook twice now and it's been a sheer delight both times. Neil Gaiman narrates his book beautifully. Let your children listen to this. It's magical.
Beautifully read, creating just the right atmosphere.
An enjoyable book for both adults and older children.
