When a baby escapes a murderer intent on killing the entire family, who would have thought it would find safety and security in the local graveyard?
Brought up by the resident ghosts, ghouls and spectres, Bod has an eccentric childhood learning about life from the dead. But for Bod there is also the danger of the murderer still looking for him - after all, he is the last remaining member of the family.
A stunningly original novel deftly constructed over eight chapters, featuring every second year of Bod's life, from babyhood to adolescence. Will Bod survive to be a man?

"Thrilling, elegant and joyously macabre. You will love it to death." (Holly Black, author of The Spiderwick Chronicles)
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this on vacation with my girlfriend. The story is great and it really comes to life with narration of Neil Gaiman, I recommend this to anyone.
If you're only going to read or buy a book from audible, let this be it! What a great story! What compelling narration! Thank you Neil Gaiman! This is not just a book for kids. I bought this book because it sounded so interesting! And so it was! More than interesting, it was engaging and addictive listening. The characters came to life for me listening to this book! So buy it for you, THEN buy it for your kids! :-)
I was very taken with the story of this wonderful book, which can be read and heard by anyone - teenager or grown-up alike. The entire book is very sweet and almost naive, but at the same time, there are both scary characters and children as heroes. The main character, Nobody Owens, is very innocent but at the same time strong and open to all the things. I highly recommend this book - I heard it in one fell swoop and could not bear to press pause. The author is very talented, painting pictures with every word!
The characters don’t change during the book but the solution mystery is nice.
Very well read, maybe it contributed to the reason I finished it.
A delightful book, and a wonderful performance by the author. I really cannot recommend it enough.
A fantastic story with lovely detailed characters, full of surprises. That Neil Gaiman himself narrates the story is definitely a bonus. Loved it and could not stop listening till the end
This was my first adult audio book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I also really liked the narrator, what a surprise that it was the author himself. There are few authors that could pull that off. I hope he narrates other author's books and more of his own. The story was interesting, flowed well and kept me listening.
LOVED it. Listened until 2am last night, usually I'm asleep by midnight! Finished the book first thing this morning. So good :)
"Amazing! Loved it!"
Listened to this after it was recommended by Tim Ferriss. I listened to it every day in the car to and from work. Really great story, normally I prefer non fiction but I can't recommend this enough.
"The best of Neil Gaiman"
I love this book so much, I regularly listen to this with my kids.
It is bitter sweet and beautiful all at the same time
He's my favorite narrator of their own stories. Sometimes the authors narrating their own stories can be really dry and off putting. However Neil is perfect, characterisations, inflections and his own little humour is narrated perfectly
The end is so sad and beautiful, it chokes me up everytime
"Captivating and witty"
A joy to listen too - well drawn characters and wonderful narration - drawn into the world of the graveyard and the characters- wonderful
Great story, well narrated. I applaud the author for not only writing the novel but for his superb narration.
"the greatest book ever"
I enjoyed the voices Neil gaimen gave to the characters interesting and very mysterious.loved it
"brilliant and captivating,"
could not stop listening to this. keeps you on tenterhooks all the way through.
"Great little ghost story"
I'm a teacher and our school was lucky enough to receive some free copies of this book through the Book Trust last year. I finally got round to reading it and was really impressed.
If you don't appreciate scary books, don't be put off by the first chapter - the remainder of the book is sometimes action-packed, sometimes sentimental, sometimes funny, but never as terrifying. A well-written book which probably resembles 'Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone' more closely than anything else. If recommended it for readers from 10 to adult. A thoroughly enjoyable read!
An incredible book well read. I am so sad it is over. I know I will listen to it again.
"Beautiful story, told wonderfully by the author."
A great tale, told with a soft voice. Nobody Owens lives an unusual life amongst the dead. With the threat of his own death hanging over his head he must find his way in life, and find a way to live longer.
