When a baby escapes a murderer intent on killing the entire family, who would have thought it would find safety and security in the local graveyard?
Brought up by the resident ghosts, ghouls and spectres, Bod has an eccentric childhood learning about life from the dead. But for Bod there is also the danger of the murderer still looking for him - after all, he is the last remaining member of the family.
A stunningly original novel deftly constructed over eight chapters, featuring every second year of Bod's life, from babyhood to adolescence. Will Bod survive to be a man?

"Thrilling, elegant and joyously macabre. You will love it to death." (Holly Black, author of The Spiderwick Chronicles)
Neil Gaiman at his best I loved listening to this tale. And again in the second listening with my daughter (7) when on the road in the car. Neil has great characterizations for his characters and being the author shows in the intimate way the tale unfolds.
Absolutely recommended! The story is beautiful, this is truly one of the best books by Neil Gaiman. And he is an amazing narrator..
Absolutely the best!
Moving, Haunting, funny
Narrated magnificently by the author who you feel truly lives in his characters. Its a book with all the elements - mystery, humour, fun. Its about growing up and friends and loyalty.
No, but now am searching for everything he has written and narrated
Wanted dead or alive....or is that alive or dead?
please please do yourself a favour and listen to this book. we listened with our 10 and 12 year old and we all LOVED it.
Hi I am a geologist that now lives in South Australia I work in remote locations and find audiobooks essential for my sanity.
I simply did not want this audiobook to end as it was pure inventive pleasure. The story is in turn funny, compassionate, scary and moral tale. There are so many threads in this story that I am sure another author might turn it to a six volume airport series, however Neil Gaiman is an excellent wordsmith and paints pictures that do not require HBO specials. Of course the added plus is that the author reads his own work and thereby adds colour to such a well written tale. Do yourself a favour and listen
I loved this book. Captivating characters and so well written. It kept me wanting to sit in the car to find out what happens next. I will be looking for more of Neil Gaimans books
It is a wonderful book and if you have never had sad or wonderes story when you where a chilled this book is a must now. Do you have children now and wonder if this is a book for them, then yes, let them hear it and answer there questions.
The books you read at the right age, stays whit you. You love them when you grow and they grow whit you.
Marketer. The Engineer-MBA stereotype. Sports-fiction writer. Poor reader of text. Thus at Audible. God Bless.
Cannot comment. This is the first and only book by Neil Gaiman that I have read via audio, and absolutely loved it. Just like I loved the previous Gaiman reads - which I read on print.
The book it is inspired by, Jungle Book, by Rudyard Kipling. Kind of a coming-of-age novel, with dollops of fantasy.
Also, the fantasy / magic novels which follow the template somewhat: the Harry Potter series etc.
Also other coming-of-age stories:
To Kill a Mockingbird.
Pather Panchali, a Bengali novel by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay (from which a very famous movie was made later by Satyajit Ray)
Nothing that i disliked.
Miss Lupescu's rescue of Bod from the ghouls.
Bod's leaving the graveyard, right at the end.
This was a great little book. It was read well, the story was entertaining and interesting and unusual. I really enjoyed it even though it is a children's book.
This must be my favorite audio book to date. This story would have been good read by any one, but Neil Gaiman added to it even more
I tell every one who doesn’t know Coraline, that it is very ‘Nightmare before Christmas’ / ‘Corpses bride’
I enjoyed the magic of the grave yard –Bod’s adventures with all the dead and their stories and the secrets of the grave yard he explored.
This is really a good book, definitely worth a credit. The author reading it made the audio book even better, because who could better understand precisely the mood of each scene and the personalities of the characters. Different people like different kinds of books, but I can’t imagine that any one would listen to this and regret it.
"Great adult/young adult book"
Loved the story, quite dark for a childrens book. My critism is I don't like music on the audio books. Sometimes the narrators voice grated on me. But glad I bought this one.
This is a wonderful story, and very well narrated by Neil Gaiman himself. It seems advantageous that the author is reading it, as he knows exactly how all the characters and names ought to sound, and he understands his own phrasings. Bod's adventures while growing up in a graveyard are both imaginative and exciting. I would thoroughly recommend this audiobook
This is marketed as a Young Adult book but it is also a wonderful adult fantasy that had me lying awake hours past my usual sleep time to hear the ending. It is read by Gaiman himself, really well, and it means that you know that the interpretation of the characters is correct (something you cannot always be sure of). A terrific listen.
"Great story. Awful music"
Enjoyed the story. loved the narration. hated the music. why is it there? so irritating!
"What a treat!"
Such a lovely story for dark winter nights - great for adults and children alike.
Great storyline easy pace really enjoyed it sets nicely another hopefully !!! New adventures to come many possibilities
"I couldn't Finish it"
Although a very imaginative book I couldn't finish it. Maybe would have enjoyed it if I was 12/13. To me this would be a far better film than it is a book and I do believe that Disney have bought the rights to it, I will look forward to watching in a few years time.
a wonderful adventure, read exquisitely well. true , the music between chapters is a little unnecessary, but it adds a little personality to the modern tale of good overcoming the bad.
I'd recommend this to the young and old in equal measure.
This book was amazing. Heart breaking and heart warming. Beautifully read and written. Listened to it on repeat and just loved it. Would recommend it to any adult looking for a adult grim book. Just amazing.
"Gaiman on a high note, excellent"
loved it! one of Neil Gaiman's excellent turns at stories for young people (that adults can also enjoy)
