I just learned how to read, so I figured I'd just listen.
everything was great, except the sound effects often drowned out the reader. the effects were much louder than the story.
I'm a corporate training consultant and adjunct professor who loves to read! I'm always looking for the next big thing.
I really love this story; however, there was far, far too much background noise and voices that were supposed to enhance the experience. It had just the opposite effect and was very distracting.
I, as an adult, found it interesting. My seven year old son found the bad things that happen to the children disturbing. He especially had problems with the baby being bound and gaged and hung out a window. I am told in book #2 the same baby is threatend with having her toe cut off? An age recommendation would be nice.
The quality of the recording is excellent, second to none. I can't see me downloading any more though, as I really didn't like the book. If anyone hasn't come accross it, (as I hadn't), this is a VERY depressing tome. Snicket cleverly paints a beautiful picture of childhood idyl, and then smashes it into a million pieces in one sentence, genuinely shocking the reader. Following on from that, things go from bad to worse for the primary characters, and I found myself feeling very down after listening to it. I shan't say any more as I don't want to give away the ending but be aware this is not a happy ending read.
I love this series, but this reading in particular is hard if you have problems processing audio. Theres a part when Sunny just yells in the background while, as well as characters talking over each other. its not good, poorly balanced, and incredibly overwhelming.
Lots of folks didn't like the sound effects, but I actually enjoyed them. I listen to books while I run, and once I got used to them (took the first five minutes) it really helped me dive into the story!
The most distracting section of sfx is probably the first five minutes anyway. With all of the beach and trolley sounds being unnecessary and overbearing. Let yourself get to at least Count Olaf's introduction before you make your judgement!
Everything else was indisputably perfect.
Amazing Story, good for any age. Very funny and slightly dark humor! Tim Curry! Enough said.
My son, 9, liked the different voices and sound effects. The only thing I didn't like was that some times the sounds were louder than the narrators voice making it hard to hear what he was saying.
I saw the series on TV and just had to get the book as there is scarcely an adaptation to screen which I have ever found to be better than a book! Great job by the author of introducing new words to kids. I am an adult looking for books that will engage young readers while teaching them. Will definitely read the rest !!!
What a great tale, I could not stop listening all the while hoping that something pleasant was going to happen to the three orphans!! A must hear!!
