Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential: The Bad Beginning may be, as Lemony Snicket reveals, a miserable tale, but it is a joy to listen to. This full-cast production is of the highest caliber, filled with orchestral music and chilling sound effects. I loved Tim Curry (yes, Dr. Frank N. Furter) as the infamous villain Count Olaf, and was charmed by the witty Baudelaire siblings, who rely on books to help them avoid the Count's treachery. —Diana Dapito

Publisher's Summary

Like a car alarm, bagpipe music, or a doorbell ringing in the middle of the night, hearing this all-new audio edition of The Bad Beginning will only upset you. This unique multi-voice recording brings the first book in Lemony Snicket's alarming A Series of Unfortunate Events to such terrible life that no one should really have to experience it. Unless you have an ear for such ghastly details as a tragic fire, a nefarious villain, itchy clothing, and cold porridge for breakfast, all narrated in chilly detail by the distinguished, and disturbed, Tim Curry with a team of talented readers, you would be better off listening to something else.

"Great story, but a terrible production"

I really love this story; however, there was far, far too much background noise and voices that were supposed to enhance the experience. It had just the opposite effect and was very distracting.

"Great story for a family road trip"

My boys (7 & 8), as well as my wife and myself, were all thoroughly engaged with this Lemony Snicket tale as we were making a long road trip south for vacation.

    "Road trip Approved."

Started this series on a road trip with my 6 & 8-year-olds. Tim Curry does a great job. Starting the next one now!

    "Fun"

Listening to this 'book' was like a blind man watching the movie.

    The cast was fun,
    The story was light hearted,
And all in all it is a quick and easy listen

"Tim Curry Is the Perfect Narrator!"

Tim Curry is excellent in his reading. His voice captures the pure essence of Lemony Snicket's work. The addition of background music and the use of other voice actors really add another layer to the audiobook experience and help listeners really visualize the world.

It was just as good if not better than reading the book itself. Excellent! I recommend it very very much.

"A wonderful story for family car trips"
Would you consider the audio edition of The Bad Beginning, A Multi-Voice Recording to be better than the print version?

This is truly an immersive audiobook. There are several excellent narrators and background soundtrack that contributes to making this one of the best audible experiences I have had.

    Any additional comments?

I listened to this with my wife and 10 and 12 year old daughters on a car trip headed to the ski mountain. They wouldn't let me pause it and were eager to start it back up again the moment we got back in the car for the trip home. At about 2 and a half hours, the length was perfect as an introduction to audio books for them. The story itself is humorous and unpredictable, if not a bit creepy, but overall very entertaining.

    "Bravo Performance!"
If you could sum up The Bad Beginning, A Multi-Voice Recording in three words, what would they be?

    Fun, light read.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The heroine, Violet, is certainly a hero to root for! I think children would enjoy this audio.

What does Tim Curry and Full Cast bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The drama and music were so professionally done and I doubt that I would have enjoyed a flat performance with one narrator.
