"Endearing for young and old, full of wit and wisdom and amusement." (The Horn Book)
Julie Harris absolutely makes this book! The tale is whimsical, entertaining and fun, and nothing at all like the movie- it is far superior.
This is a great listen for kids and is entertaining enough for adults to listen either alone or along with the family.
By far my favorite audible find so far, in large part because of the captivating reader.
Julie Harris does a fantastic narration. This is a favorite for our whole family on long car trips. Our kids like listening to this story better than watching DVDs! Highly recommended.
I love reading and listening to books, especially fantasy, science fiction, children's, historical, and classics.
Stuart Little is a perfect book: delightful, charming, funny, philosophical, unpredictable, wistful, and finally mysterious. It is so short and so perfect!
And Julie Harris, the accomplished American actress of stage and cinema, has a perfectly savory voice and clever and caring manner for her reading of the book (which was done in 1965 when she was forty, apparently), infusing it with appealing wit and emotion and poetry in all the right places. Hearing her read (no, mumble) the lines of a dental patient with his mouth stuffed with several wads of gauze, or the comical and finally beautiful exchanges between substitute teacher Stuart and his pupils, or the exciting sailboat race, or any of the other wonderful scenes, is a pure pleasure.
Highly recommended to everyone!
My 7 year old daughter enjoys audio books. This is one that she can listen to when her friends are here. When she has a sleep over and they wont stop giggling - I can turn this on and they will listen and be quiet. I dont have to worry about the content - its appropriate and they enjoy it. She has listened to it many times.
This is our first experience with Julie Harris. She did a fine job.
I enjoyed this book as much as my daughter.
Gentle, compelling, timeless
Clearly read at just the right pace to be understood by a child. A gentle read.
Excellent way to introduce a child to the pleasure of audio books. Each chapter stands on its own and captures the attention of the young listener. I enjoyed this book in my youth and found my grandson equally entertained.
A painter who reads and has three boys and four dogs and a d.h.
I recall in 1960 something a family friend read this to all my other three siblings and myself. We really were taken to another world and we needed this due to having less than ideal parental circumstances. Our parents cared a great deal about pawning off their children onto others but there was no love lost as long as we could hear our friend reading "Stuart little", she also read secret garden which was equally as fascinating. The next thing we knew we were all reading to our own kids and bringing back those great old memories.
Not much voice or tone change, no excitement in the readers voice. I am sad to say, a bit dry:(. But, it does put me and son to sleep;)
