Publisher's summary

Long ago, a King ruled the land of Story.

During his reign, heroes, villains, and characters of all kinds lived out new tales filled with daring quests and epic struggles.

Then the King disappeared, and over the years, nearly everyone forgot that he had ever existed. Now an evil enemy has emerged, determined to write a new future for Story that he will control. And an ordinary girl named Una Fairchild is inextricably tangled up in his deadly plan.

Una and her friends Peter and Indy are desperate to find a way to defeat the enemy. But Una soon discovers that the real key may lie in her own mysterious ties to Story's past - and to the long-forgotten King, who could be Story's only hope for survival.

Clever idea but not enough

This could have been fabulous except that it lacked depth It was simply boring. I did finish it but it was not worth the 15 hours of total listening time. Finally it did not resolve who all the characters were and how they fit together. I have absolutely no desire to find out anything more about any of them. This was too complicated to be a children's story and not meaningful enough to be an adult one.

Her accent :)

I liked the story. I liked her accent, and overall I loved the story and
the characters. And the book just ended. I’m really sad.

Fresher and more entertaining than the first—I wish there were a third book!

There are some series where you can see the authors growing along with their worlds and characters—Storybound falls firmly into this camp, in my opinion. The first book is entertaining, but feels too generic, failing to define its mythos and setting enough to distinguish itself amongst its competition in the well-populated “pulled into a fairytale” genre. The characters felt unfinished, and most of their growth and development occurs in this second volume. While volume one presented us with the idea of a world where characters from across literature exist as living beings, we only end up skimming the surface, and are shown little outside of the fantasy and fairy tale worlds and their respective occupants.

Story’s End is a big leap forward. The characters who seemed one-dimensional, or whose motivations and ideas are only vaguely explored in Storybound are fleshed out in this sequel. At the end, I no longer saw any of its named characters as generic YA archetypes. The principal characters (and many secondary ones) are given distinct personalities and motives, as well as positive and negative traits. There are no simple “bullies”, infallible heroes, or mindless cronies amongst the cast. Most of the “villains” are not as well developed in my opinion, but nor are they left completely devoid of rationale. I felt invested in all of the characters’ outcomes.

The world of Story itself is also explored, distinguishing itself from a loosely-defined idea to a functioning universe with rules, limitations, and unique character. In addition to fantasy, we see an entertaining hodge-podge of literary genres (I won’t spoil the surprises!), and the equally entertaining interactions between their much-varied denizens.

All in all, I look forward to seeing future works from this author. I feel that over the course of her characters’ journey, she herself grew in her skill and ability to entertain. While the conclusion to this series was satisfying, I find myself wishing I could have dallied a bit longer in the world of Story (and spent more time chatting with the talking cats). Brava!

uplifting

I really enjoyed the plot of good against evil, and the thought that we can all write our own stories.

SO SATISFYING

Any additional comments?

If you read the first half of this story in Storybound, then you're already sold. All I will say is: I LOVE HOW THIS TALE WRAPS UP!

Great conclusion to an inventive two book series

If you could sum up Story's End in three words, what would they be?

captivatingexcitingfun

What other book might you compare Story's End to and why?

Pennroyal Academy because it goes farther then most of the fairy tale remakes out there. Both series have their own very unique spin on retelling the stories in an adventurous way that grabs the reader.

Which character – as performed by Elizabeth Evans – was your favorite?

Una and Peter were on the top of my favorites list.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book did make me laugh and at other moments hold my breath as I waited to see some of the big scenes unfold.

Any additional comments?

After. I listened and found there was nothing bad that I wouldn't let my younger children listen to, then I had them listen and they loved both books too (ages 6-11).

Not terrible, but there are others I like more

The story is a bit garbled and new characters seem to pop out of nowhere.

good, but only for older kids

I was surprised to find this rated for kids 8 and up as I felt it was really only appropriate for kids maybe 12 or younger as it really was very violent and cool and I didn't think it was appropriate for my 8 year old
