Editorial reviews

In this second installment of the Chronicles of the Red King from New York Times best-selling author Jenny Nimmo, magician and lost king of a destroyed secret kingdom, Timoken believes he has found a home in Britain. When an evil steward imprisons him, Timoken escapes with the help of talking camel Gabar. Narrator John Keating's upbeat, easygoing voice is buoyed by his action-packed pacing as Timoken embarks on a quest to build his own kingdom. Keating has a real knack for the story's humorous beats, especially when Gabar resists the flirtations of a too-friendly dragon.

Another wonderful story

I have listened to all of the Charley Bone series and also her Magician series. I LOVE the narrator and the stories are fun and engaging. This new book is every bit as good as the rest and somewhat less stressful (the Charley Bone series gets kind of stressful when evil characters get away with some pretty horrible things). If you've read or listened to the Charley Bone series it's fun to get to know the origin character and his experiences and how it all began.

Good, but

Timoken saves many, and in turn is saved by the cats, dragon, ancestors and wizard; even the children; and Gabar. Good story - but as an explanation of how his castle came to be, feels a bit flat. I guess it is that magic flows too easily, for and against Timoken. With so many writers these days wrestling with defining the rules of magics in their world, there does not appear to be any of that here.

Excellent

I love the narrator. This series makes the Charlie Bone series even more interesting. I love the Red King and how he keeps acquiring more and more loyal friends.
