Publisher's summary

It's a murder mystery on the moon in this humorous and suspenseful space adventure from the author of Belly Up and Spy School.

Like his fellow lunarnauts - otherwise known as Moonies - living on Moon Base Alpha, twelve-year-old Dashiell Gibson is famous the world over for being one of the first humans to live on the moon.

And he's bored out of his mind. Kids aren't allowed on the lunar surface, meaning they're trapped inside the tiny moon base with next to nothing to occupy their time - and the only other kid Dash's age spends all his time hooked into virtual reality games.

Then Moon Base Alpha’s top scientist turns up dead. Dash senses there's foul play afoot, but no one believes him. Everyone agrees Dr. Holtz went onto the lunar surface without his helmet properly affixed, simple as that. But Dr. Holtz was on the verge of an important new discovery, Dash finds out, and it's a secret that could change everything for the Moonies - a secret someone just might kill to keep.

BEST BOOK IN THE WORLD

This book was soooooo awesome the first time I heard oh it was in my class and my teacher read it to us till chapter 14 she said don't read it at home but I did and it was amazing! I have school today so I'm not going to tell her that I read it over spring break and its 12:16 in the morning so I must leave. (READ THIS BOOK)

Highly Entertaining!

My son who hates reading, even listening to books was asking to stay up late to continue listening. He loved it so much that I listened to it and he couldn't wait to find out where I was in the story so that we could talk about it!

Classroom Hit!

We did this in class as an audible book while following along with the hard copy and my third grade students couldn't get enough. Very fun and exciting book.

Reader

If you could sum up Space Case in three words, what would they be?

Adventure, excitement, cliff-hanger

Who was your favorite character and why?

Dash and Kira work well together.

Would you be willing to try another one of Gibson Frazier’s performances?

His reading is pretty dull and monotone. I would like to see more acting in his reading.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I am using this as a 6th grade class novel whole read.

I Guess If You're Into Racism!

My kids love the Spy School series as well as the Fun Jungle series. Due to streaming availability, they actually listened to the second and third books in this series before getting to listen to this first one. They have listened to the audio versions of all of Stuart Gibbs books more times than I can count and I have never taken any real issue with anything in those books. However, this book crossed the line.

Let's play a little game here:

"Omari and Ayeesha are virtually the only pure black people my age I've ever met. Everyone else I know is a blend....The Zarouqs, however, are pure African Sudanese stock, with coiled black hair, black eyes, and skin so dark it looks like an oil slick...So to me, on a normal day, the pitch-black Zarouqs were strange. Now, with their sneering, blood-smeared faces, they looked like things from one of Roddy's intergalactic virtual reality games."

Now how does that passage sit with you? Sounds f***** racist to me. I would venture to guess that that passage would NEVER be printed in any children's book published as recently as 2014. Here is the original passage from the book:

"Patton and Lily are virtually the only pure white people my age I've ever met. Everyone else I know is a blend....The Sjobergs, however, are pure northern European Caucasian stock, with blonde hair and blue eyes and skin so pale it looks like the belly of a fish...So to me, on a normal day, the snow-white Sjobergs were strange. Now, with their sneering, blood-smeared faces, they looks like things from one of Roddy's intergalactic virtual reality games." (Page 109)

When I overheard this passage in the audiobook I was absolutely gobsmacked that this made it past the editor into a book for children. I guess because it was written about a set of white, European kids it didn't strike the author or editor as hateful or racist?

I don't care if someone wants to write the only white people around as bad guys. What I take issue with, (especially in the context of light, middle school adventure books) is very specifically using ancestry as a way to justify or reinforce their otherness, and skin color to reinforce their appearance as unattractive and frightening. Save this kind of race based characterization for an older audience in a context where the complexities of race is actually germane to the novel.

I allowed my kids to finish the book, it is good to learn how to confront and reconcile with things we don't like-- but one listen was enough and this won't make it onto the repeat rotation.

Performance is good, nothing amazing. I found the story okay (not as good as the Spy School series) but I'm giving it 4-stars because my kids enjoyed it and it's written to their age group.

AMAZING

I loved how the story took place on the moon and that is was just so interesting I recommend this book to all.

I the whole moon base alpha direction and how the murderer was hard to find. If you read this book picture yourself on the moon as dash and don't let anyone spoil it.

Fantastic Story

Would you consider the audio edition of Space Case to be better than the print version?

Narrator was fantastic. My 8 year old daughter loved the story and could have listened to it in one sitting. I imagine reading it would be as fun as listening.

What did you like best about this story?

Great characters.

Which scene was your favorite?

The last chapter.

Any additional comments?

We can't wait for the next Moon Base Alpha story!
