Audible Editor Reviews

Why You Should Download This Audiobook: The most famous young wizard of all time (who shall not be conjured here) has quite a few precursors: Ursula K. Le Guin's The Wizard of Earthsea is one, and Nita, in this delightful book, is another. If you appreciate fun fantasy filled with adventure and wonderment, we won't harry you. We simply and emphatically recommend you don Ms. Duane's brilliant gem.

Publisher's Summary

Because she insists on fighting with words instead of her fists, 13-year-old Nita is regularly tormented by a gang of classmates. One day, running to escape their blows, she hides in the only safe place nearby: the library. When a book about wizardry catches her eye, Nita finds the help she needs in its pages. As she moves from chapter to chapter, Nita learns more sophisticated spells. Soon, stepping through a worldgate, she enters a shadowy city swirling with vicious taxicabs and carnivorous fireplugs. What begins as a simple quest quickly becomes a struggle to keep a powerful and ominous force from passing back into Nita's world.

Ranked with the best of Madeleine L'Engle and Diana Wynne Jones, Diane Duane's magical tale of wizardry and wisdom has become a modern fantasy classic. Christina Moore's delightful narration captures all the excitement and danger in this thrilling fantasy adventure.

You can listen to Diane Duane's entire Young Wizard series.

"Great Beginning to a Great Series"

The Teen Wizard books have been among my yearly reads since I was the ages of the charactes. In this first installment, Diane Duane introduces us to the world of her Wizards -- people of every species who are given the power to join the ultimate battle against entropy and death. From the first moment that Nita's hand gets caught by a strange book in the library, we readers want everything for Nita that she wants for herself: the small desires that drive the plot, and the large desires that pull her and her friends into the fight in Life's name.

So You Want to be A Wizard is one of my favorites of this series. The beginning draws you in almost immediately, the characters are likeable, the premise is fascinating and surprising. There is a section in the middle that has a few too many consecutive action scenes for my taste, but the heart of the story comes back quickly. The ending is satisfying and poingant, the sort for which the clues have been laid all along, so you get to it and know that it couldn't have gone any other way.

I read this series before I listened to it, and I remember the shock when I first heard Christina Moore's voice -- it didn't match the voice in my head, and it was strange to hear it saying the same words I'd read so many times. But now, I always listen to these books rather than read them. Moore's narration brings the story to life. The main characters' personalities shine through their voices, and the skill with which she reads the climax makes it much more powerful than when I've read it silently.

One of the basic premises of the whole universe in these books is that words -- particularly spoken words -- have enormous power. The books themselves become the magic they contain when read aloud and heard.

    "Re-read"
What did you love best about So You Want to Be a Wizard?

You get immersed into the story right from the beginning as Nita is running from her bullies, jumping into the library, and proceeding to the 'Young Adults' section where this story unravels. This was a book I read when I was younger and had to run through it another time. Well worth it, too.

What other book might you compare So You Want to Be a Wizard to and why?

The "Uglies" series is another well put together series that younger and older people alike can delve into. Both of these series really put your social awareness, or how you perceive social situations, through the ringer and make you rethink who we are as a humanity.

What about Christina Moore’s performance did you like?

Ms. Moore's performance was pretty well acted out. I especially enjoyed her accent for Kit's persona. Very good.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This read makes you laugh and cry, smile and furrow your brow, giggle and cringe all throughout (especially if you go on in the series). This story is very well constructed and you feel like you are a part of the adventure the whole way through.

"so you want to be a wizard review"
If you could sum up So You Want to Be a Wizard in three words, what would they be?

    Over coming challenges.

What was one of the most memorable moments of So You Want to Be a Wizard?

The reading of the book of night moon

Have you listened to any of Christina Moore’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No I have not.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I would not make a movie of this book I do not believe film the ultimate media.

    Any additional comments?

Is one of the most serious fantasies i have come across and still had a fun time reading it. I've thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. there have been times that have brought me to tears, and time to like so your point but has come together and made this a great read.

"Please don't waste of a credit"

    1) it was boring. I finally gave up on it -- it kept putting me to sleep (so buy it if you have insomnia!!). I finally gave up on it - and I finish basically all books I buy.
    2) it is NOT like Harry Potter books, other than its about a couple of kid wizards
    3) its not funny. its not 'riveting'. its not interesting.
    4) normally I don't comment on narrators, but this one didn't do it for me at all.
    Please don't waste a credit!

    "Good plot....bad voice actors."

The story line of this book is really intriguing. It is a really interesting story, built well, but a little hard to follow. However, the voice actors or narrator is really bad, which makes the book seem worse than the story actually is.

    "Very Childish"

Knowing it is a children/young adult book, I read the reviews before buying this. I do not agree that it can be read by adults. It is VERY childish. Perhaps good for children- but adults... beware! I can not even finish listening to it. And it has nothing on Harry Potter- the first books anyway.

"not as good as I thought"
What made the experience of listening to So You Want to Be a Wizard the most enjoyable?

    Actually never finished

What was most disappointing about Diane Duane’s story?

It started off great; then went into so much detail about nothing we got lost; I read a review that stated it was as good as Harry Potter, "not so", not even close.

    "Random & Flat"

My family and I tried to listen to this story on a long car drive. Despite being a captive audience, we just couldn't get into the story. The plot development seemed random and unbelievable, and odd terminology was presented without introduction.
