a star in this genre

nicely done. great characters with a real sense of young love without idiocy. Realistic despite the wherewolf connection. And likable. You root for them and the storyline is not plain stupid (like many recent ones i won't name now). No, it's not shakespeare or anything, but it's a good story without falling into the traps of the genre. And really one of the more intelligent teen romances i've read in some time...

Enjoyable

This one is hard to sum up in one line, but I'll give it a go - Teenage girl gets one cold autumn with the human form of the werewolf she's loved since she was a child.

Very sweet without being saccharine, an enjoyable read. I'd like to read this one again, but on paper - I sometimes found the male narrator's characterization in the audio version distracting, but the story was still quite lovely and shone through the awkwardness.

The werewolf lore here was different - instead of changing at the full moon, they change when it gets cold, which was a nice touch and really added to the story.

I really liked it and can't wait to read more from Maggie Stiefvater.

Nice story

Shiver is a different kind of werewolf story. In this story young werewolves get to be human during the warmer months of the year and are werewolves for the winter. It is primarily a story of Sam the werewolf and Grace the teenager that was bitten bitten by wolves when she was a very young child but never turned into a wolf. She is very attached to watching the wolves that live near her home....most of all one beautiful wolf with amber eyes...Sam. I do not want to give the story away but Grace and Sam get to know each other when he is forced into his human form during the colder part of the year. I think this is a very well done YA story
One really small thing I really loved in the book is at one point Sam is reciting part of a poem by Rilke. The scene only lasts for a few minutes but I liked Sams reading of the poem so much that I searched on Audible for readings of Rilke but the narrators of Rilke poems on Audible are not as good as David LeDoux.
I enjoyed the brief interview with Maggie Steivater after the book and I wish more authors would share their own thoughts on the books they write.
I believe I will read the other books in this series but I will wait a while before I start book 2

Just OK

Shiver was OK. The characters were simple and the story line fairly transparent. I have never heard of teenagers who drink so much coffee, or live such boring lives - nothing excites these people! Grace's parents should be called into Social Services for neglect - how do they not notice a boy living in their home? You would think that a town with werewolves would be more exciting or mysterious. The switching back and forth with readers/characters became annoying and the "cure"...oh please.

Cute story

Enjoyed it. The narrator was okay. I liked the males voice better and giggled when he was speaking for grace in the story.

story + narration are perfect!

the voices are perfect. young but not juvenile or obnoxious + obviously Stiefvater’s story is magical. her books are ideal for an easy read or for a parent looking to entice a teen into turning the TV off without having to worry that the book is just as full of crud as the television.

One of my favorites!

Ive read this book now 3 times and have just now listened to the audible version. I am in nursing school so I don't have time to read for fun, so my drive in the car has been spectacular. If you love this author, this is a must read series. AUDIBLE 20 REVIEW SWEEPSTAKES ENTRY

Nostalgia in the best way

I read this book in highschool and adored it. I recently recommended it for my book club as an adult because I was so find of it as a kid. It didn't disappoint! It has it's cringy, "children being children" moments, is very reminiscent of the 2000s climate that I was young in. But just as I remembered, when the story picks up half way through, it really picks up. She does a great job building the characters to really feel their loss and pain as it all wraps up. I still recommend it!

Inventive Wolf YA Drama

Grace's early encounter with the wolves in the woods just beyond her backyard created a connection. She dreams of the wolf, who seems to have saved her, and his striking yellow eyes. When he shows himself in human form, the questions and mystery with their surrounding love story take off.

The idea for how the wolves transform; are created; hunt; live together; and many more intracacies are fascinating. Steifvater has a different take on the werewolf genre. She's talented and in the candy store sequence, as a reader, you believe you can smell the sweets and feel the old wooden floor beneath your feet after hearing the tinkling bell on the shop door.

The only drawbacks are the narrator for Sam, who sounds like a thirty-something and how whiny and anguished the characters come across. There a few lazy holes in the overall story, for example, Grace's parents are so flighty they don't know if she's at home or has eaten.

Overall, this story is definitely worth a listen for YA enthusiasts, young or old, who enjoy wolfie love stories.
