Runemarks

Seven o'clock on a Monday morning, 500 years after the end of the world, and goblins had been at the cellar again...Not that anyone would admit it was goblins. In Maddy Smith's world, order rules. Chaos, old gods, fairies, goblins, magic, glamours: all of these were supposedly vanquished centuries ago. But Maddy knows that a small bit of magic has survived. The "ruinmark" she was born with on her palm proves it.

Publisher's Summary

Seven o'clock on a Monday morning, 500 years after the end of the world, and goblins had been at the cellar again....Not that anyone would admit it was goblins. In Maddy Smith's world, order rules. Chaos, old gods, fairies, goblins, magic, glamours: all of these were supposedly vanquished centuries ago. But Maddy knows that a small bit of magic has survived. The "ruinmark" she was born with on her palm proves it - and makes the other villagers fearful that she is a witch (though helpful in dealing with the goblins-in-the-cellar problem). But the mysterious traveler One-Eye sees Maddy's mark not as a defect, but as a destiny. And Maddy will need every scrap of forbidden magic One-Eye can teach her if she is to survive that destiny.

What the Critics Say

"[Harris] creates a glorious and complex world replete with rune-based magical spells, bickering gods, exciting adventures and difficult moral issues." (Publishers Weekly)

    "Beautifully Narrated"
    Any additional comments?

What lisp! indeed. There is no lisping and no mispronunciation in this narration. She reads the book beautifully and i like her so well that I plan to look for other books she has narrated. As for her Irish accent, I looked her up on Google and her accent is just as it should be for a native Dubliner - Irish.

Not yet finished the book but so far I love it and it only makes me want to hear more. Love Joanne Harris!

    "Really good"

I really enjoyed this story, I did notice a lisp in the narrarator at first but I think it is just part of the accent she used, and not at all noticable once the story gets going. I would listen to other books she reads.

"Interesting, narrator takes getting used to"

The story is very interesting, though complex. The narrator really annoyed me for 2/3 of the story, then I began to appreciate her. She seems to be trying to affect some sort of accent that does not come naturally to her, causing her to mispronounce many words in various ways each. It distracted me from the story.

    "good book, lousy narrator"

Why would a company choose a narrator who lisps?
