Publisher's Summary

Why is the land so important to Cassie's family? It takes the events of one turbulent year, the year of the night riders and the burnings, the year a white girl humiliates Cassie in public simply because she is black, to show Cassie that having a place of their own is the Logan family's lifeblood. It is the land that gives the Logans their courage and pride, for no matter how others may degrade them, the Logans possess something no one can take away.

    "Good story"

This is a great story about a black family's struggle in the 1930's in the Southern USA. I used the narrative (with the paperback books) in my middle school class (for 2 years now) and the students love it. Most of them have very limited knowledge of the Civil Rights struggle in America. We used the book along with speeches by JFK and ML King, Jr and segments of the Harriett Tubman story to survey slavery and civil rights in the United States. The narrarator does an excellent job telling this story. My students couldn't wait to get to the end, and then they wanted to read the next book in the Mildred Taylor collection!

    Any additional comments?

The chapters are completely off with the book. I use the audiobook for my reading class, and while the audiobook says chapter one, we were at the end of chapter 2. NOT TEACHER-FRIENDLY!

    "Wonderful Storytelling!"

I can't believe this was written in 1976 and I'm only just now reading it. Should be required of all middle schoolers in America.

"Book Had Me On The Edge of My Seat"
What did you love best about Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry?

This book is an amazing book. My mom wanted me to read it years ago when I was in Junior High. I took no interest in it and never read past the first 5 pages. I ordered it on audiobook because my now junior high daughter has it on her reading list for school.

This book is amazing and I understand why it won the Newberry award and I am so pleased it is on her school reading list.

It allows a student to journey back in time when things were a lot different in this country. The characters are very relatable and the challenges they face put a realistic historical face on many African American experiences during that time.

In addition, this book transcends the years and many of the same lessons and experiences the kids endure and learn from are still applicable today. I look forward to many discussions with my daughter regarding this book.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Cassie, because she is willing to push the envelope. And Stacey because his is a loyal friend and sibling that shows a lot of growth throughout the book

Have you listened to any of Lynne Thigpen and Jacqueline Woodson ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    NO.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Take a Step Back in History and emerge yourself into a world full of love, turmoil, injustice and perseverance.

    Any additional comments?

Great reading for any Junior High Student. Should be discussed with adults

    "Powerful and moving"

As an elementary school teacher, it is difficult to teach children about sensitive topics like racial prejudice. However, this book does an excellent job of describing all sides. It is so important for both white and black children to see good in people (Cassie and her family, Mr Jamison and Jeremy) as well as the bad (the Sim's brothers, Mr Granger and others). The book has so many teachable moments that it will be difficult to get through the novel.

    "Brilliant"

I first read this book at school around 15 years ago, as brilliant, thought provoking and important as I remember. A brilliant story on many levels and a true coming of age story. A must read for children and adults.
