Why is the land so important to Cassie's family? It takes the events of one turbulent year, the year of the night riders and the burnings, the year a white girl humiliates Cassie in public simply because she is black, to show Cassie that having a place of their own is the Logan family's lifeblood. It is the land that gives the Logans their courage and pride, for no matter how others may degrade them, the Logans possess something no one can take away.

"Vivid - complex - powerful - convincing - The novel shows the rich inner rewards of black pride, love, and independence." (Booklist)
This is a great story about a black family's struggle in the 1930's in the Southern USA. I used the narrative (with the paperback books) in my middle school class (for 2 years now) and the students love it. Most of them have very limited knowledge of the Civil Rights struggle in America. We used the book along with speeches by JFK and ML King, Jr and segments of the Harriett Tubman story to survey slavery and civil rights in the United States. The narrarator does an excellent job telling this story. My students couldn't wait to get to the end, and then they wanted to read the next book in the Mildred Taylor collection!
The chapters are completely off with the book. I use the audiobook for my reading class, and while the audiobook says chapter one, we were at the end of chapter 2. NOT TEACHER-FRIENDLY!

The narrator is incredible, the story is beautiful and educational. A wonderful story which will lead to many enriching conversations about black history.
Roll of thunder hear my cry was required for my reading class and I thought it would be so boring but it has been my faveorite book in a while.
Lynne Thigpen does a great job narrating this book! I listen to this while im going to sleep all night the time! I would reccomend it to any and everyone even if your not really into historical fiction. I really like all the other books by Mildred D Taylor as well. Great book! 😀
This book was awesome yes it had some tough parts but my Childern loved it. They do not ride the bus so we listened on the way to school and on the way home and they were always excited to hear the next chapter. It also spoke to a time that myself and my children did not live through but my grandparents and great parents did so it has opened a lot of questions for them as well.
I read and loved this book as a child and purchased the audio version for my daughter. The narrator did a fabulous job throughout. It was nice to experience the Logan Family journey again as an adult together with my daughter.
"This should be on everyone's book list."
A story full of everything. Seen through the eyes of a child. The best way to view such stories.
"fabulous, sad when it finished, I wanted more"
this is a brilliant story. will have you completely gripped. some bits so sad, some so tense and some will make you want to high five someone!
I first read this book at school around 15 years ago, as brilliant, thought provoking and important as I remember. A brilliant story on many levels and a true coming of age story. A must read for children and adults.
