Publisher's summary

In 1918 Wisconsin, 11-year-old Sterling North has an almost perfect life. He keeps skunks in the backyard, goes everywhere with his enormous Saint Bernard, and is building a canoe in the living room. The only trouble is life gets a little lonely for him and his father since his mother died. While scouting around the woods one afternoon, he discovers an abandoned, month-old raccoon. Afraid the kit will die on its own, he takes it home to join his menagerie. Soon Sterling and the mischievous raccoon Rascal are sharing one adventure after another, swimming, fishing, and camping. Theirs is an unforgettable friendship - until everything suddenly changes one warm spring day.

In this heart-warming classic story, the author shares his irresistible childhood during a simpler time and introduces youngsters to his real-life pals. Sterling and the playful Rascal spring vividly from the pages with narrator Ed Sala's sense of fun and drama.

vibrant and poignant

I read this several times as a child and once a an adult. the writing so effectively takes you to another place and time. along the line of old yeller and effete the red teen grows, this true story is truly heart-warming. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Very Enjoyable

Sterling North was born around the same year as my grandmother, 1906. She was one of eight children and two of her brothers fought in WWI "The War to End all Wars" in the Navy on the same ship. I have always been interested in what it might have been like during the time she grew up as a child. This doesn't get close to her life except in that Sterling had a brother fighting in Europe and that he also got sick with the Spanish Flu. I remember my grandmother saying that her family was spread out around the world during the Spanish Flu pandemic and that they were lucky that not one of them died from it. Both things I remember my grandmother talking about. This story read by Ed Sala is one of the best audio books I've listened to. My twin boys listened to it when they were about five and really enjoyed it.

Fascinating story!

North is a stellar writer. And the reader perfectly matches the tone of the story.

Loved this nonfiction story!!!!

Kids and adults enjoyed this one, will definitely get the print book as well- it’s a classic you want to always have around! Like Ol Yeller or Where the red fern grows, but even better because it’s true!

Remembering what I loved as a child.

My mother reminded me that this is one my favorite books when I was a kid.

All though I wasn’t huge fan of the reader of this book at first I did not take me long to get drawn in the story again. If you are looking for something to make you long for the freedom of youth look no further.
