Publisher's summary

When Pollyanna was published in 1913, it became an overnight success. It immediately sold over a million copies as young and old alike fell in love with the little freckled orphan girl and her spirited optimism. Many of Beldingsville’s citizens are ill, misguided, and even despairing. The sparkling, ingenuous 11-year-old who descends upon them with her "glad game" gives them renewed hope and changes their lives forever. Then unexpected tragedy strikes, and Pollyanna can no longer find the silver lining in any cloud. Can a child’s suffering possibly serve any purpose?

Author Eleanor Porter wrote, "I have never believed that we ought to deny discomfort and pain and evil: I have merely thought that it is far better to greet the unknown with a cheer." With the added bonus of Barbara Caruso’s skillful reading, even adult listeners will be challenged to finish the book dry eyed.

The Reading of Pollyanna

I like how I control the speed of the reading and just hearing the audio of the reading helps me stay focus on the reading since I'm not a strong reader on books. I do wish I could read along with the audio so I can see the words I can't spell in my head but luckily I found a digital book for Pollyanna on a website. Best of I was able to finish reading/listening the book in just three days instead of weeks. Thanks

A lovely story about changing people

Lively narrative that conveys a sense in intention and purpose to seeing reality from different angles. Many occasions to help people change and connect differently.

Saccharine

I got this book out of curiosity after reading Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, which I enjoyed. Rebecca was published in 1903, Pollyanna in 1913 and they both portray a girl who brings a cheerful positive attitude to the challenges at hand. Unfortunately, in Pollyanna, this theme is taken to such a ridiculous extreme that only humor might have been able to save it ... and I don't think this was written as a parody.

Classic story we can all use these days.

If more of us would play the glad game, the world would be a better place. This is a well written, well constructed story with some antiquated words and phrases that seem odd, but quaint, but the message and characters still ring true. The ending is disappointing, but overall, a classic. Well read by Barbara Caruso.

Noise in the background

You can hear noise in the background of this recording but the narrator was wonderful.
