Adolescents always come through

It is so hard to believe that as a society we used to place people with physical disabilities in insane asylums. This story was such a powerful example of how just listening and being there for another person changes us. It also shows how it often takes a special young person to truly understand those who are different and not treat them differently. Such a powerful story.

Very touching story

I thought the narration was excellent. It made you feel as if you knew Petey. This was a very touching story. I learned to appreciate what you have and that ever life is valuable.

GREAT BOOK

I enjoyed this bool. I had to read it for class but I opt tp listen to it. The reader bought the characters to life and made me feel like I knew all of them.

Compelling, amazing, loving, work of art.

I remember reading "Petey" when I was in sixth or seventh grade. I remember loving the story and being moved by the entire thing. I was only 12-13 and I didn't have much life experience. Now I am 22 and have actually worked with people who has disabilities, I have in laws who have disabilities and to feel the story in the new mindset I have is...indescribable.

The butterflies I had when I started chapter one to the tears that flowed from the last chapter were intense. My feelings about this book are so powerful, I cannot convey them with words. My heart broke and my feelings were tugged each and every way until the last sentence; The last part is where I felt grateful to be able to read such a beautiful story again that I had read so long ago.

I highly recommend. This book holds a special place in my heart.

a MUST read💗

Read this book twice on paperback before getting audible(so cant say much about the narration on here, the sample sounded great though.)Once in 10th grade, the 2nd time last week at 29 years old.. I cannot get over how amazing it was, both times. It shows us that everybody needs a chance, and how much it can change somebody's life doing so. I see myself reading this for a 3rd time in the future for sure..

Heartwarming

This book has brought happiness sadness joy, and tears to me. This is my all time favorite book since I was a child. This nonfiction novel is worth the read every time, opens your eyes more about the unknown of other people’s struggles and how important it is to be caring. I love this book.

As a longtime carer...

for someone with severe CP, there was an equal balance of good and cringeworthy in this book. That said, it is NOT an appropriate introduction to this disability for children! While the details of the disability were very familiar, the presentation of this information was terrible. To dwell on personal hygiene particulars and liken them to a baby was one example of how lacking in respect for the dignity of the person was continually in view. Likewise, repeated references to the disabled as idiots and disgusting, while used as contrast, is a very poor choice of introducing respect as a given. Sure, there may be a very small group of ignorant people, it should not be suggested as the NORM before one gets better educated. Children should be given appropriate, respectful information without including ideas they might otherwise never entertain. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR EDUCATORS!

Difficult to find the right spot

What did you like best about Petey? What did you like least?

I used this audio version for my 6th grade Language Arts classes. While the reading itself (the narrator) is very well-done, the way that the audio is broken up is very inconvenient. The book on audio is separated into sections rather than by chapters--this makes it very difficult to find the correct spot to start from.
