    "Wonderful!"

This is a classic story that was done very well. The music wasn't cut short as in other recordings I've listened to, and Jim Dale can do no wrong.

    "Grandfather is an old bassoon"

This concert is one of the best ways to introduce a child to the assorted parts of an orchestra. I first heard this concert in the early years of 1940. Later, I purchased the Leonard Bernstein version for my children to hear. Now, I bought this version from Audible to share with my granddaughter.
She was delighted to know it was read by Jim Dale, the "voice of Harry Potter" and she sat beside me as we shared a pair of earphones to listen to it together. When it was over, she borrowed my ipod so she could hear it again. Later in the day I overheard her walking around, humming Peter's theme.

    "Not The Classic!"
Has Peter and the Wolf turned you off from other books in this genre?

    No.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Is a beautiful performance by both the narrator as well as the Seattle Symphony.

    Any additional comments?

The ending has become more p.c. for children which I think is wrong. The wolf is now taken to a zoo. What the point of having the hunters in story at all? Peter could have just returned to his grandfather and called the forest ranger for that. It destroys a classic! And the performance is so beautiful too. DEPRESSING.

"Poor engineering renders this one I'm returning"

The volume level is far too low for enjoyable listening. Even at maximum volume on both my Kindle Keyboard and the plugged in speakers, I lost parts of the story whenever ordinary household noises occurred. Narration and music were in somewhat closer balance than The Shoebird, but not engineered well enough to keep.

    "My Child's favorite!"
What made the experience of listening to Peter and the Wolf the most enjoyable?

Having my child say, "Mom, the WOLF!"

What does Jim Dale bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Dale's narration is whole-hearted. He paints the pictures with his words and inflections.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It gets me through long car trips. Listening to it for the hundreth time on repeat can make me want to cry, though!

    "Short and Enjoyable"
What did you like best about Peter and the Wolf? What did you like least?

I liked the fact that I now understand more of the story behind the music of Peter and the Wolf. I appreciated the explanation of which instruments played what characters. The narrator was also really good. His use of inflections, different voices, and voice acting made it fun to listen to. What I liked least about it was the fact that, although I appreciated the narration, it also broke the flow of the story that the music was expressing. There were times when I wished to just hear how the story played out through music rather than listening to the interjected narration. I suppose, however, that that is what the music CDs are for.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The most interesting aspect of this story, for me, was its blend of music and narrative storytelling.

Have you listened to any of Jim Dale’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not listened to any of Jim Dale's other performances (aside from a sample) but I would not be averse to listening to more books from him. I've read that his narration of the Harry Potter books is really good.

    "Never Disappoints"
If you could sum up Peter and the Wolf in three words, what would they be?

    Still a delight

What was one of the most memorable moments of Peter and the Wolf?

    Wolf swallows bird

What does Jim Dale bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

A voice to accompany the music

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Of course.

    Any additional comments?

Grandchild wanted it (age 6). He was pleased with the production.
