Publisher's summary

This is the first-ever authorized sequel to J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan!

Set in the 1930s, when the devastating effects of World War I are still resonating throughout the world, Peter Pan in Scarlet takes listeners on an unforgettable journey fraught with danger. All is not well. Dreams and nightmares are leaking out of Neverland as it chafes against the Here and Now, wearing holes in the fabric in between. Somehow, Time is moving on where Time was never meant to go. Fearing for Peter Pan's life, Wendy and the Lost Boys find their way back to Neverland with the help of the fairy Fireflyer, only to discover adventure waiting in ambush and their worst nightmares coming true in the most unexpected ways!

The Special Trustees of Great Ormand Street Hospital for Children, who own the copyright to Peter Pan, marked that work's centenary by authorizing the creation of a new novel that would share the same characters as the original and bring as much pleasure to children and adults around the world as has Peter Pan. The result of a worldwide search to find just the right author for this special sequel is Peter Pan in Scarlet by the renowned and multi-award-winning Geraldine McCaughrean.

Not fun

Through most of the book, Peter is not the character Peter Pan as you would hope for. There's a plot driven reason for it, but I just don't get the reasoning for making the title character so thoroughly unlikeable. Tim Curry did a good job of making him sound completely insufferable, but is that really the kind of story anyone wants to listen to? Much of the story drags on in the later half also. If you want a Peter Pan audiobook, get the original stories instead.

A Dark and Unpleasant Take On Neverland

While some of the story elements were charming or interesting, the whole story was disappointing. It was disjointed and strange, but not in a fun way. The author clearly does not like or understand children. It was like "Peter Pan" meets "Lord of the Flies". Peter Pan is an unpleasant bully here, and too much real life (war, environmental poison) intrude on Neverland. Not for children, but not for adults either, this story was pretty unsatisfying. Well read by Tim Curry though.
