Why we think it's Essential: This is a rare instance of two outstanding recordings of the same source material being considered for this list of essentials. But while we all enjoyed Jim Dale's enthusiastic performance, it was Tim Curry who most captivated us with his rendition of this classic children's tale. Curry's ability to evoke sheer childhood joy one moment and hide-under-the-sheets menace the next creates a far richer Peter Pan than Disney ever dreamed of. Ed Walloga

    "Laugh and Cry"

I purchased this, never having read the original, simply because I am a huge fan of Tim Curry's audiobooks. I defy anyone to listen to this without laughing out loud much of the way through, and then, silently weeping at the ending. I now think that only by experiencing J. M. Barrie's original story can one fully appreciate why it is a true classic. Curry's narration combines marvelous fun with a subtle sensitivity. This is a story and a performance with enormous heart.

    "Tim Curry, The Voice"

If you're only familiar with Peter Pan from Disney or the last movie, you owe it to yourself and your kids to listen to the book that started it all. And this is the version you want.

Tim Curry is a wonderful narrator; his voice of Hook alone will give you shivers and goose-bumps. It's the penultimate pirate voice.

If I were still a kid, in bed, wanting to be read to, this is one of the voices I'd most want to listen to.

He also does the 'A Series of Unfortunate Events' books, by the way.

    "Simply wonderful"

Tim Curry breathes life into this wonderful classic children's story. His voice gives such warm, comic expression to the snooty grown-ups, the treacherous-yet-stumbling pirates, the pouty fairy Tinkerbell, the nervous or excited children, and of course, the cheeky, indignant Peter Pan. Even if you're intimately familiar with the story, Curry's telling is memorable and well worth the listen.

    "It soars ..."

Peter Pan was one of the first books I downloaded from Audible (the version read by Donal Donnelly). It was so bad a recording that I was questioning the wisdom of my 2-book-a-month commitment.

Fortunately, that disappointment has not been encountered again. And here was an absolutely divine recording of this classic story (if you only know Peter Pan from Disney, you owe it to J.M. Barrie, and yourself, to give a listen).

Tim Curry does a brilliant job reading the story, and the recording is -- in all other ways -- first rate. I'd not listened to other Curry reads, but after this I'll be looking carefully at anything that has been or might be released with his narration.

    Bravo Bravo Bravo

    "A terrific story, well read"

Like many, this book is much different and better than the Disney version that the kids were familiar with. The book is wonderful for kids (ours are 6 and 9), but also sneaks in some great lines just for the adults. And the narration by Tim Curry is outstanding - he really makes the book. We didn't listen to any other version, but I can't imagine a better narrator. Buy this.

    "Our alltime favorite"

Tim Curry is perfect as the narrator. We've listened to this 100 times and never get tired of it. It's a real work of art, so much better than the movie of our childhoods.

    "Not just for Kids!"

Tim Curry is sublime. Could there be any better narrator for Peter Pan than Tim Curry? I think not. This is a wonderful story with a wonderful performance that you can and will want to listen to it over and over again.

    "This isn't Disney."
Where does Peter Pan rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book ranks pretty high on the list. It's nice to read/listen through the classics that I should have read long ago. My daughter read this and book when she was about 10 and didn't like it-it wasn't the Disney version. She actually read the book we had. I suppose it would have been a lot different had I read it to her. Hopefully, she'll read it to her own kids or try it again as an adult...but unless you appreciate being and reading to as a child might-it's not going to be the same since Mothers have grown up and Boys don't always.

Which character – as performed by Tim Curry – was your favorite?

Captain Hook-boy could you hear classic Tim Curry snarling and sounding crafty. Wonderful!!!

    Any additional comments?

I chose this book because of Tim Curry. I love his voice and characters in film-he is definitely so very memorable.

    Any additional comments?

Curry's voice for Hook is delightful and gravelly and perfect. The book has few surprises since it is a classic, but the reading was good. I enjoyed this and would recommend it to others.

    Story
"The Boy Who Never Grew Up Made This Grown Up Smile"

Although I know the story well enough, I've never actually read it until now.

Barrie's story is a remarkable tale of childhood innocence, arrogance and the bonds of family. While the story is familiar to almost everyone, Barrie's actual tale can be quite dark at times, with murders and death scattered throughout the chapters. His fondness for the Darling children doesn't preclude the narrator from his offering his perspective that they can be quite heartless and self-centered at times.

The narrator voice jumps back and forth throughout the story and sometimes even talks directly to characters and then to the reader. This was a bit off-putting, but that's a personal preference.

I think what I most enjoyed about this tale was the snark and wit that comes through the pages. It's not something that's seen in the Disney version. After reading this story, I realized the live-action Peter Pan film made in 2003 is probably the closest translation of the book.

This is a wonderful, fun story. If you've never read it, I encourage you to do so. You will thoroughly enjoy revisting a childhood favorite.
