Publisher's summary

On holiday in Cornwall, the three children discover an ancient map in the attic of the house that they are staying in. They know immediately that it is special. It is even more than that - the key to finding a grail, a source of power to fight the forces of evil known as the Dark. And in searching for it themselves, the Drews put their lives in peril.

This is the first volume of Susan Cooper's brilliant and absorbing fantasy sequence know as The Dark Is Rising.

Critic reviews

"Jennings' ability is outstanding as he slips in and out of the numerous voices with the rapid dialogue as it approaches the climax....This is an outstanding reading of a classic tale that all young listeners and adults will thoroughly enjoy." ( School Library Journal)

Shared a childhood favorite with my kids!

Loved this thirty years ago when I first read it, and loved it just as much now introducing it to my kids [and husband]. Was a perfect vacation title for our long drive - young and old were enthralled! Arthurian legend just never gets old : )

Great confort woven into fantastic adventure.

A true credit to the fantasy genre. Cooper spins a truely contented yarn into Arthurian legend.

A treasure . Enjoyable story

I was often tense as I listened to this tale of good against evil and the unrelenting mishaps we find ourselves in just as the protagonist did. But here we see it coming . Great story .

I have loved these books since I was a child.

The performance was captivating, and I am so happy to be able to share these books with my children again on our road trips:-)

Great family entertainment

I read these books as a child and adored them. The audiobook versions are wonderful and I have shared them with my children who also have enjoyed the series. The first two books are a good mix of cause a contemporary times and Arthurian mystery. Greenwitch might be the weak link. But the series as a whole still stands strong in the crowded young adult fiction and fantasy category
