Ten-year-old Annemarie Johansen and her best friend Ellen Rosen often think of life before the war. It's now 1943, and their life in Copenhagen is filled with school, food shortages, and the Nazi soldiers marching through town. When the Jews of Denmark are "relocated", Ellen moves in with the Johansens and pretends to be one of the family. Soon Annemarie is asked to go on a dangerous mission to save Ellen's life.

Clearly meant for young adolescents

What did you like best about Number the Stars? What did you like least?

The book gave a glimpse into what families went through during the world war and the impact that the war had on young children.

If you’ve listened to books by Lois Lowry before, how does this one compare?

I have never listened to Lois Lowry before.

Any additional comments?

I was surprised that this book was not memorable for me.

Number the Stars

This is a great book, but the narrator speaks too quickly and makes it difficult for fifth grade students to follow along.

lovely story

I loved the simplicity and gentleness mingled with the realism of what was happening in the war from a child's perspective. it was beautifully told and read. fascinating to hear what was true at the end of the story!

Deeply affecting middle grade novel

Fear and foreboding accompany the reader as they listen, or as they flip the pages, but I walk away from this novel more filled with hope. That this is the story of a friendship, and a young girl, that steps into a harrowing situation, an act bravely for her friend.

The middle was my favorite part.

I liked how the reader of the book described it as if she was those people in the story.
