Mrs. Frisby, a widowed mouse with four small children, is faced with a terrible problem. She must move her family to their summer quarters immediately, or face almost certain death. But her youngest son, Timothy, lies ill with pneumonia and must not be moved.

Fortunately, she encounters the rats of NIMH, an extraordinary breed of highly intelligent creatures, who come up with a brilliant solution to her dilemma. And Mrs. Frisby in turn renders them a great service.

I spend a lot of time with my daughter listening to audio books. This is one of our favorites. The narrator reads well with no strange pronunciations or annoying inflections. I love it when the narrator is so good that the listening experience flows without any glitches from something annoying that the listener has to consciously ignore.

The story is a classic from my childhood and it still grasps interest of young readers today.

If you're tempted at all you should get it. In my opinion you won't be sorry.

A great classic brought to life on audio

I had greatly enjoyed the Don Bluth movie of this book as a child and always intended to read the book but never got around to it. Noticing it on Audible I picked it up and found it an excellent listen. Very well narrated the story sucked me in immediately and I actually had difficulty putting it down, even before the titular Rats put in an appearance. AUDIBLE 20 REVIEW SWEEPSTAKES ENTRY

This is another story I read when I was young that I didn't remember much about. I have never been a big fan of talking animal books, but there is something so heartfelt about this one. The animals are all very human in their interests, wants, needs, and desires, and that makes them easy to relate to.

I don't suspect I'll ever read this one again, but I enjoyed revisiting it. It has been interesting to compare books from my past to current day upper elementary and middle grade novels. There are some definite differences, but it's hard to put it into words and explain those differences. The story structure from these older novels seems to be a bit more open ended or something.

Talking Animals Aren't My Fav But This is Okay

I’m glad I didn’t read the description before I read the book, because it just straight up mentions the secret of NIMH. I’m 36 years old. I have a degree in English and I know about structure and storytelling, and I did NOT see that one coming. Please just change the description to something more vague so you don’t ruin it for children.

The book is amazing but the description gives way the big reveal
