Publisher's summary

On the first day, there was mystery.

Arthur Penhaligon is not supposed to be a hero. He is, in fact, supposed to die an early death. But then his life is saved by a key shaped like the minute hand of a clock.

Arthur is safe - but his world is not. Along with the key comes a plague brought by bizarre creatures from another realm. A stranger named Mister Monday, his avenging messengers with bloodstained wings, and an army of dog-faced Fetchers will stop at nothing to get the key back, even if it means destroying Arthur and everything around him.

Desperate, Arthur ventures into a mysterious house - a house that only he can see. It is in this house that Arthur must unravel the secrets of the key - and discover his true fate.

The first audiobook of a spellbinding series by Garth Nix, the author of The Seventh Tower, Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen.

Loved it...

I found this to be an extremely imaginative story that is fast paced and thoroughly enjoyable. The characters are well thought out and the voice actor did a tremendous job making them all distinctly different. I would whole heartedly recommend this book to fans of fantasy.

Read the series in middle school, still love it

I am looking forward to the whole series. I loved the books as a kid and I still do. The narration is spot on and Allen really brings it to life with his range. Now for Grim Tuesday.

A Childhood Story Come To Life

It’s almost hard to believe there was a time before the chaos that is now our normal as adults, where we were once children in school merely learning how to pronounce (and spell) chauffeur. It was then, in my fourth grade year of English, where we sat to enjoy individual reading time. I found only this book, the first in the series, on one of the shelves and sat down to read… Oh, how I was transported to a time that no longer exists by listening to this! I love the story, but this man’s voice added so much depth and clarity to the story! Really, if you can, I’m too excited to tell you of it, so open your ears and listen! Just listen, and dream, and imagine. Let it cultivate your curiosity, your creativity, and dare I say show it to the child who fancies stories of magic. This isn’t your average magic book where boys survives evil!

Nostalgia read

This is the first book in the Keys to the Kingdom series, the first series by Garth Nix I ever read. Rereading this book reminded me why I loved this series: the world. I think I have might have mentioned it in my previous reviews of Nix’s books, but his worlds are incredible. What I realized during this reread was that while the world was amazing, the writing did not bring anything new for me.

I am going to talk a little about the world and its denizens. The House is the epicenter of the universe and it was created along with the rest of the world by the Architect. The Architect left the House and the known world and entrusted her power to seven trustees to execute her Will. Of course, they didn’t, and from there comes the plot. Nix’s world was amazing, the natives of the House, Denizens, were the uncanny valley of characters, looking like humans but not always acting like humans. That was one of my favorite parts of the books.

While I enjoyed revisiting the world, the reread reminded me how similar the story was to other stories in this genre. Overall, I see why I loved this series as a kid.
