Editorial reviews

"Dahl's stories work better in audio than in print.... [Kate Winslet's] Matilda is younger than Broadway's, has less attitude and more adenoid. But at the aggrieved voices of the horrible Wormwoods, or Miss Trunchbull, or several schoolchildren, I laughed aloud." (Gregory Maguire, The New York Times Book Review)

Publisher's summary

Now a musical!

Matilda is a sweet, exceptional young girl, but her parents think she's just a nuisance. She expects school to be different but there she has to face Miss Trunchbull, a menacing, kid-hating headmistress. When Matilda is attacked by the Trunchbull she suddenly discovers she has a remarkable power with which to fight back. It'll take a superhuman genius to give Miss Trunchbull what she deserves and Matilda may be just the one to do it!

Here is Roald Dahl's original novel of a little girl with extraordinary powers. This much-loved story has recently been made into a wonderful new musical, adapted by Dennis Kelly with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin.

Quirky and Fun

This is just what I needed. Something fun, quirky to clean my palette after reading a couple of thrillers. Enjoyed it just as much as the movie.

wonderfully read!

This story can get pretty real. Miss. Honey's past is tragic. just be prepared to discuss with kids. Amongst the sad stuff there is a light heartedness and comedy too. the terrible adults are almost comically awful. cartoonish. and there are lovely characters too. Kate Winslet does a FANTASTIC job reading. switching up voices just enough without going overboard. it was a really enjoyable experience to listen. We got it to listen to on a long road trip and when the kids wanted to stop my husband and I continued without them!

Lovely

Should I be upset at how educators and parents are portrayed? I didn't think so, until someone pointed out that I should, especially as an educator. But here's the thing: Matilda is a brilliant, cunning, child who succeeds in spite of some of the adults in her world, and because of others. There are redeeming adults in her life and the message is to rise above whatever your circumstances, even if your parents suck.
