Sort of derivative, but engaging enough

This is definitely a children's book, as the language is very simple, and there's some repitition of more complicated storyline. Unlike the Harry Potter series, this is not as appealing to adults. But like Harry Potter, it involves magic, both good and bad, and would probably be enjoyable on a family car trip.
I found the narration enjoyable, even though the vocalizations of characters didn't differ much, one from another. It was more like a straight reading, rather than a more dramatic one.
My ratings are based on this being a children's book.

Engaging

Very engaging for the younger crowd. I enjoyed it but couldn’t get over the passive verbs, sorry.

The story was great fun full of magic and adventure. I enjoyed it as much as I did the Harry Potter books.

Amazing narrator

Allan corduner did such a good job narrating this book. I have read the paper versions and loved them but will not be listening to the rest of the series because they switch to a different narrator for book 2 who ruins the characters with the voices he does.

Jeez, sometimes I just want people who leave bad reviews online to go jump in a lake

All of the criticism for this amazing 1st book is so baseless. There is a review saying it’s a “Harry Potter ripoff” a more ridiculous statement has never been said. This series is much more original than anything JK Rowling ever wrote, the elements of Harry Potter were themselves stollen from books such as The Wizard Of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin, and JRR Tolkiens books, etc. Harry Potter was far from the first fantasy book aimed at children and so why should it have to be the last?! As someone who enjoyed Harry Potter, and these books, as a kid, and has read both again now, I can say that the lack of tasteless humor, plot holes, and underlying sexism, along with the unique world building, the complex cast of lovable characters, and the multi layered plot, makes Magyk the superior fantasy novel.
Stop. Whining. Potter. Stans.
