Publisher's Summary

An exciting new tale set in the world of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials saga. Lyra's Oxford opens in the thrilling comfort and familiarity of Jordan College, where Lyra and her daemon Pantalaimon sit on the sun-drenched roof looking out over all of Oxford. But their peace is shattered when a strange bird (a witch's daemon, on its own) tumbles out of the sky. It is Ragi, daemon of Yelena Pazhets, and he seeks a healing elixir from an infamous Oxford alchemist (and rumored man slaughterer) to cure his witch of a strange new disease from the South. Lyra and Pan decide to help and guide him (witches are friends, of course) but the closer their winding walk leads them to the alchemist's house, the stronger Lyra's sense that she's walking into a deadly trap.

    "Great story, great reading"

If you loved the His Dark Materials trilogy, you'll love this story, which continues some of the threads in the trilogy. It takes place after the trilogy, and probably won't be comprehensible if you haven't read the earlier books. The reading is excellent -- one of the best I have ever heard -- with the author reading the narration, and various actors reading the character parts. My only quibble with the reading is that the actress who does Lyra's part sounds about 10, though Lyra must be 15 or 16 at the time of the story.

    "Top Notch"

As always, Phillip Pullman draws you into the Lyra's world and you are given vivid impressions of her surroundings and thoughts. Well written, it will help us Dark Materials fans wait a bit longer for the next release to hit the shelves. Having read the other books, I can relate to this one. However, a newbie to the series should start with The Golden Compass, because you will surely miss the significance of this book until you've read the others. The only thing that one could say bad (if it's bad) is how short this story is. A great little book for a bedtime story or commute, but not a very long read at all. It ends way too soon!

    "Good extra"

After finishing His Dark Materials I went in search of other books from the author. I wanted more like the original stories so I tried this shortstory about Lyra. The story takes place two years after The Amber Spyglass and thankfully adds some to the story. I would LOVE to read even more about both Lyra and Will and all the other characters! Personally I loved it but it was very short. Also recommended Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches and In the Service of Dragons.

    "48 minutes"

Although this was typical of the Dark Materials series I'm surprised they actually put it into production. It seems as though the author wanted to write another book, then gave up after one chapter. I had to rewind because I thought I must have fallen asleep and missed something. Unfortunately, I hadn't. The reading and production of this story were excellent for all of 48 minutes.

    "Nice extra"

This is not a long selection but just a "nibble" to tide you over until the next book is written. It was interesting and was in keeping with the story line of his previous works. I liked the rather light sentimental agenda for a change. Not enough "meat" though.

    Any additional comments?

I had no idea this was a short. suits me right for not reading the details. Stang that is costs so much for just 45 min of story.

    "Ten bucks for this?"

Love the original series but seriously... ten dollars for a 45 minute book? Where was the happy ending?
