A desert-island adventure, and a subtle observation of friendship, trust and humanity.
Winner of The Children’s Book Award.
Superbly read by DEREK JACOBI.
When Michael is washed up on an island in the Pacific after falling from his parents’ yacht, he struggles to survive on his own. He can’t find food and he can’t find water, and as Michael and his dog curl up to sleep, he knows they cannot last long.
But he soon realises there is someone close by, someone who is watching over him and helping him to stay alive. Following a close-run battle between life and death, the mysterious stranger – Kensuke – allows Michael into his world and they become friends, teaching and learning from each other, until the day of separation becomes inevitable.

"This is a wonderful book, a modern day Robinson Crusoe and is simply too good to miss." (Wendy Cooling)

Whilst I could probably listen to Derek Jacobi read the telephone directory and enjoy listening to it - the whole story is highly enjoyable. I always find that, whilst Michael Morpurgo writes for "children", they are highly enjoyable by adults too ( perhaps its the big kid in all of us?)
I was so impressed by this novel that I decided to use it as part of my English teaching programme. The narration is absolutely superb and had the children completely captivated each morning.
"A touching story, read very well indeed."
This story come's alive in one's mind, the voice over is done so well, I love his English in 'Japanese accent'.
The music added a bit of flavor to it and all in all a really touching story, read very well indeed.
Every bit was spine chilling, breath taking and all amazing! I would recommend this for age 8-80! I loved it's!
This was brilliant you should definitely get this if you're looking for a interesting book
Despite being my favourite childhood book I would also recommend this to an older audience. It's read emotively and is very touching. I left music for the last few days to listen through it and I'm almost sad it's over.
"Fantastic story for all ages."
A lovely story we have listened to several times. My daughters (age 9 and 12) both enjoyed and understood this.
This is such a wonderful story. It's the first book I've heard on Audible. I read and listened to this book when I was a child, and listening to it again evoked nostalgic memories of my childhood. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone. Derek Jacobi did a wonderful job narrating this story he really does bring it to life.
I remember this book from my childhood and to this day it is still one of the best books I have ever read.
I was a bit disappointed with this book and got board with it after a while. Im 12 years old.
