A desert-island adventure, and a subtle observation of friendship, trust and humanity.
Winner of The Children’s Book Award.
Superbly read by DEREK JACOBI.
When Michael is washed up on an island in the Pacific after falling from his parents’ yacht, he struggles to survive on his own. He can’t find food and he can’t find water, and as Michael and his dog curl up to sleep, he knows they cannot last long.
But he soon realises there is someone close by, someone who is watching over him and helping him to stay alive. Following a close-run battle between life and death, the mysterious stranger – Kensuke – allows Michael into his world and they become friends, teaching and learning from each other, until the day of separation becomes inevitable.

"This is a wonderful book, a modern day Robinson Crusoe and is simply too good to miss." (Wendy Cooling)
This is a book you will want to read/hear. Eloquent and captivating, Derek Jacobi does an amazing job as narrator (of course!), :) and the story is masterfully written.
I picked this story because it seemed like a short story compared to the books I normally listen to. I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed it very much. And I plan to tell my son about it so he can let his son listen to it also.
Whilst I could probably listen to Derek Jacobi read the telephone directory and enjoy listening to it - the whole story is highly enjoyable. I always find that, whilst Michael Morpurgo writes for "children", they are highly enjoyable by adults too ( perhaps its the big kid in all of us?)
I was so impressed by this novel that I decided to use it as part of my English teaching programme. The narration is absolutely superb and had the children completely captivated each morning.
"A touching story, read very well indeed."
This story come's alive in one's mind, the voice over is done so well, I love his English in 'Japanese accent'.
The music added a bit of flavor to it and all in all a really touching story, read very well indeed.
"could not listen"
I decided to return this book after the first 30 seconds. I'm sure it is probably worth its acclaim but the audio levels were so disruptive I could not hear the narration properly over the background music. disappointing.
"Wonderful story whilst on a very long car journey!"
My family and I were all gripped the whole time. Would definately recommend. The narrator was excellent providing different voices for the characters.
"Derek Jacobi doesn't fail to deliver."
Separated from his parents in a storm at sea, and washed up on an island in the Pacific, Michael struggles to find enough food and water to survive. Until one day he realises that he is not alone.
Kensuke, a doctor who was shipwrecked on the same island after his native Nagasaki was destroyed, is there too. Together, they form an unlikely friendship and overcome their differences to plan a way off the island.
Derek Jacobi's narration is perfect for this book. He engages the listener with the dialogue of the two, very different, personalities of the characters and keep a you on the edge of your seat.
Michael Morpurgo's story resonates with both children and adults in this timeless tale of survival and friendship.
You won't be disapointed.
I would recommend this book for any ages perhaps 7+ because of how big it is so I mean it's not picture book but just an amazing book dig. Now on to the audible part the music was so so majestic because it fitted in on every chapter and half way though them as well he did great voice for the charters were how you think of them being done. Ps it makes cry at the end
Every bit was spine chilling, breath taking and all amazing! I would recommend this for age 8-80! I loved it's!
This was brilliant you should definitely get this if you're looking for a interesting book
Despite being my favourite childhood book I would also recommend this to an older audience. It's read emotively and is very touching. I left music for the last few days to listen through it and I'm almost sad it's over.
