Publisher's summary

A little magic can take you a long way.

After James Henry Trotter's parents are tragically eaten by a rhinoceros, he goes to live with his two horrible aunts, Spiker and Sponge. Life there is no fun, until James accidentally drops some magic crystals by the old peach tree and strange things start to happen. The peach at the top of the tree begins to grow, and before long it's as big as a house. Inside, James meets a bunch of oversized friends - Grasshopper, Centipede, Ladybug, and more. With a snip of the stem, the peach starts rolling away, and the great adventure begins!

Critic reviews

“Roald Dahl sometimes shared a tonal kinship with Ogden Nash, and he could demonstrate a verbal inventiveness nearly Seussian...[His] stories work better in audio than in print.” (The New York Times)

James will figure it out.

RAINBOW PAINT DRIES VERY QUICK AND VERY HARD
Dahl has a wonderful imagination. Children will love this book and Adults will like it. I enjoyed it and was always interested in what was going to happen next. James and his giant insect friends and his giant peach manage to get into several fixes, but James always comes up with the type of solution that only a ten year old would dream up. I would recommend this for seven and up, but would also suggest that you get an illustrated copy to read along with listening, it should enhance the experience. I imagine nook has a copy.

How do you put your arms around an Earthworm's shoulders?
Four people die in this book. James becomes an orphan when his parents are eaten by a Rhino. We never meet his parents and it is told as something that happened in the past. It is not described in detail or anything, just used to make James a orphan, so we can get to the evil aunts. The aunts are squashed by the Peach. I really did not feel this was necessary to the story, but it was also not really spelled out and I believe most kids may not realize that they were killed. Older kids will figure it out and I thought you should be warned. All in all it is a book that will stir your child's imagination.

Love the nonsense!

I can see kids living vicariously through this story. Sometimes there are some adults that are just not your favorite and it is refreshing and fun to hear it said out loud in a nonsensical story.

What did you love best about James and the Giant Peach?

Narrator on this was awesome - really helped make the story come to life. So great to see my children as entertained by this classic as I was as a kid. Highly recommend for an audio book.

Classic story, excellent performance.

Great book for kids and very well read. Good characterization by the narrator with some sound effects sprinkled throughout. The earthworm is my favorite.

Great children's story

The voice was fantastic. I loved how he did the voices and songs! The only weird thing was the strange sounds that played to accompany the story.

Pretty good for ages 5-8

I read this when I was younger and really enjoyed it. I wish it was a part of a series. Great for young ages but there is death 😬! Pretty good overall.
