Critic reviews

"David Tennant, best known for his role as Doctor Who, brings a slew of Scottish accents to this high-spirited rendering of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III's journey toward true heroism.... The taunting tones applied to Snotlout and his grunting sidekick, Dogsbreath, are a hoot. Tennant has a special talent for creating larger-than-life voices, particularly the lisping and stuttering of the dragon, Toothless, and the deep, malicious purring of the sea dragon. Music and ominous dragon roaring between scenes accentuate the performance." ( AudioFile)

So much better than the movie!

But isn’t that always the case? All four of my littles, ages 5-11, enjoyed this on a recent road trip. I quite enjoyed it myself. David Tennent does an ASTOUNDINGLY fantastic job of narrating. We just finished book one today and I’m getting ready to buy book two. The kids can’t wait to keep going through the series!

Precious story. Wonderful narration.

Dry humor. Great story. David Tennant kills it at narration. I don’t remember the movies, so didn’t compare it to that.

Fantastic book

My 5 year old and I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I do agree with other reviewers that the audio goes up and down often, which is slightly annoying but the book is definitely worth getting through it!

a bit vulgar, hard to hear

Difficult to hear in the car and the language was not my favorite. The characters spoke so rudely to one another and this isn't how we want our children to behave. It was a road trip choice and the recording was difficult to hear, probably a good thing. I liked the story but not the language.

kids didn't like

We tried it in a road trip and it was difficult to understand the heavy accents. I could hardly tell what they were saying at some points. The kids were lost immediately, we didn't finish the first chapter.

The movie was so much better

The voicing of Toothless was just obnoxious. All the dragons were, but Toothless was practically unbearable. The rest was okay. As far as the story goes, it falls flat compared to the movie, which is really unusual.

Awesome!

Really amazing narration and hilarious antics galore! The only concern I found was the sounds between chapters seems to be way louder in volume than the narration which means it blasts us when we are driving and can’t grab the volume fast enough. Otherwise, absolutely amazing and entertaining to all four of my kids, 10, 6, 5, and 3. Dad and mom love it as well!

A fantasy told in witty prose read with linguistic genious

Author Cowel’s raucous humor and reader Tennant’s brilliant linguistic ability bring us this imaginative story of an unlikely heroic boy and his toothless dragon whose devious resourcefulness save the village from certain arma-dragon-gedon. Don’t miss this deeply entertaining and fantastical tale for all ages.

The real How to Train your dragon

HOW DID WE LET THEM GET AWAY WITH THIS?! Look if you’ve come here from the movie you’re going to start being disappointed and then get very excited. It’s NOT the movie but that’s not a bad thing. Just as exciting and thrilling as I remember it from my childhood. Honestly why we didn’t get THIS as the movie is beyond me. Amazing read and great for a hungry imagination.
