Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III was a Viking hero - dashing, brave, and ever so hairy. But even Viking heroes have to begin somewhere.... Toothless has been captured, the nanodragon is about to be gobbled, and Sharkworms are on the loose. Once again we are relying on Hiccup to be a hero.

Cressida Cowell's "How to Train Your Dragon" series comes to life as read by Scottish actor David Tennant. His voice is magical - the accents he gives some of the characters are over-the-top hilarious -- just perfect for this great romp. Our family has the books but we have also purchased the audio versions just to hear David Tennant's performance. (Of course, as huge Doctor Who fans, we are a bit biased!)
The How to Train Your Dragon series of books are the only audiobooks we (Mom, Dad, Son (8 yrs old) and Daughter (5 yrs old) have ever listened to, and we are sold. It has been a huge hit with the entire family for long road trips.
The kids love the entire series. The highlight of this one for them was when Alvin the Trecherous fell out of the baloon.
It made us laugh. We loved it!
We recommend for the entire family. A great book to bridge the age gap between our 8 and 5 year old. I also think older kids would like it.
perfect for travel
The whole How to Train Your Dragon series is so worth its price! David Tennant's reading is amazingly entertaining. Our family now has standing jokes about Hiccup Horrendous Haddoc the Third, Big Boobied Bertha and "Oh, ye actually arr not a bad sword fighter! For a boy, o'course..." complete with the required pronunciation : ) Only word of caution: the language and accents may be hard to follow for kids under 7ish.
This is a great continuation of the adventure but some of the action and gore may be more suited to older listeners.
The great interplay between the story and the narration made this a truly entertaining and enjoyable listen. The story is solid, and well worth reading on its own - full of adventure, intrigue, creativity, and individuality - but when the narration of Tennant is added to the mix you get a 1+1=5 scenario. He really brings the already great story to life.
I occasionally have trouble keeping track of who is speaking when listening to audio books but Tennant's character voices are so distinct, and fantastic, that not only do they make it easy to follow the dialogue, they make it seem as if there is an entire cast performing the book. The only downside (and its a very small, potentially hilarious one) is occasionally I would get sidetracked trying to figure out how one person was making so many different voices (complete with trying to mimic them), I would have to "rewind" the audio to catch the bit of story I missed.
I love how real Hiccup and his friends are. This isn't the story of someone suddenly finding out they are exactly what the world thinks they should be, or of some mystical "fairy godmother" figure coming down and fixing everything. This series is about a square peg trying to fit into a round hole, and all of the wonderful lessons, challenges, and self appreciation that is gained through that process. A message we can all benefit from hearing more often.
These books are great for people of all ages!
Kamikaze's escape plans. I liked it when he actually told you how to speak Dragonese as well as when Hiccup fought his way out of the arena.
When he told you how to speak Dragonese, as the translations hilarious!
When Hiccup told you how to speak Dragonese.
When Hiccup told you how to speak Dragonese, I was lying on the floor for five minutes laughing my head off!!!!!!!
Both our grandchildren, ages 9 yrs & 7 yrs loved it; and Grandpa and I were engrossed in the story, also. We listened to it as we traveled from Kansas to California. We had listened to How to Be A Pirate earlier in the trip. It made our drive seem shorter. We enjoyed the humor and the suspense.
Yes, probably her other books in the same series.
Humor and appreciation for creativity.
Thanks for the story.
David Tennant is a GREAT narrator. We laugh all the way through the book.
The story is quite humorous and enjoyable for our entire family.
He does the most superb voices for each character.
Another winner from Cressida Cowell, we're slowly collecting all this series on audiobook and they're well worth the money. We've listened to this many times and it never gets boring. David Tennant is just brilliant at the narration.
I put this book on my boys ipod and they listened to it when they went to bed...didn't go to sleep until the whole book had finished though so glad it was a Saturday night! Definitely a winner in our house.
I loved this book. Really good. I have listened to some other books in the how to train your dragon series
"Daughter captivated by David's characterisation."
We both enjoyed listening, lucky fire me David and I read the book the same way. Hiccup is a superb role model really. ......
"Fantastic story brilliantly narrated"
Bit of a shock if you're used to the films as the characters are so different, but both my 8 year old and 4 year old loves the full set of audiobooks, made all the better by David Tennant's fantastic narration.
"Brilliant as always."
Another fabulous book from Cressida Cowell and a brilliant performance from David Tennant.
We absolutely adore the dragon books. David Tennant just brings them alive with his narration. Every character has a different voice, a different accent, it's like listening to a cast of a play.
Download and enjoy.
great for the kids listening to in the car on long journeys and the adults too
Absolutely. Giving the Bog Burglers Welsh accents is genius!
Has to be when Kamakazi is fighting Hiccup in the prison. Brilliant.
David Tennant again captures the Characters brilliantly and brings the audiobook alive. I have listened to several other audiobooks and so far no-one comes close.
Yep! And my 5 year old son did as well. He was very disapointed when we arrived at school and I turned the story off.
There is a bit of repetition from 'How to Train Your Dragoon' in introducing the characters which is a bit frustrating, but understandable if for some reason this is your 1st book in the series (but why would you want to miss out on How to Train Your Dragon?!).
"Peace on a long journey"
I downloaded this knowing we were going to be spending 4 hours in the car and my three children and husband would never agree on what music to listen to (kiss v radio4). The story was well read David tenant is easy to listen to with lots of expression. No one complained and the have asked for the next one!
