Publisher's summary

High in the Swiss Alps, Heidi, a five-year-old orphan, comes to live with her grandfather. His neighbors say he is a fierce old hermit, of whom they are all afraid. Heidi, however, proves to be a remarkable, unaffected child, who quickly charms her grandfather. In fact, for Heidi, nothing could be better than living with him. She enjoys a genuine enthusiasm for life: for the goats, which she helps Peter to tend; for the spring flowers on the Alm; for the thick slices of bread and cheese that her grandfather prepares for her; and for the simple hay bed that she occupies in the loft of his hut.

However, her Aunt Dete doesn't understand, and it is a sad day when she takes Heidi to live in a strange city with a strange family who wants a companion for their young invalid daughter named Klara. Heidi does her best to be a friend to Klara, but her longing for home becomes too much to bear.

Hollywood through its inventions and alterations has never done justice to Johanna Spyri's Heidi. It has always served up syrupy and unsatisfying movie versions. On the other hand, the narrator Johanna Ward pours forth mountain tops, fir trees, goat herds, flowers, slices of goat cheese, howling winds, bright stars, heartbreak, love and the magnificent wonder of life. This is the story of three men, an old woman and a young woman each broken and alienated in their own way as told through the optimistic and cheerful orphan Heidi. It is a story of their healing and reconciliation. Each had a heavy burden, the grandfather, bitter at the world, rich Herr Sesemann with a beloved but perhaps dying daughter, the doctor suffering from the lost of his own daughter, the lonely, poverty stricken grandmother and wheelchair bound Clara Sesemann.

Heidi is a very simple girl with simple dreams and faith, for this is a book of dreams and faith. Clara told her father that life was never dull with Heidi about. Heidi lighted up every room she entered from the grandmother's dark corner to the grand rooms of Frankfurt mansions. This is a story of five people who drew from Heidi new strength and made it their own becoming changed within then healed and whole again.

A MUST-HAVE!!

Johanna Ward is an EXCELLENT narrator! This is a perfect audiobook to listen to when you need a break from the lengthier heavy plotted novels (and I've listened to all sorts!).

Delightful!

What made the experience of listening to Heidi the most enjoyable?

I loved the narrator's intonations and her use of various vocal effects.

Any additional comments?

I read this book years ago. Needed something to listen to while exercising. The story was more enjoyable than I remembered. Johanna Ward made listening a thoroughly delightful experience.

Excellent!

I bought this version of Heidi for my first grade homeschooled daughter. She was glued to the story and never wanted to turn it off. She finished it in 4 days and wants to start it over again. The reader does an excellent job!

Sweet story

This is an endearing classic children story good for old and young that touches on remembering that God can make something wonderful out of not getting what you pray for.

completely endearing!

I've always wanted to read this as a kid and now as an adult I can just listen to it. I adored this! I did not find it the least bit boring as I read in a few reviews. I love the sweet, simple pace and the beauty of seeing the world through a child's eyes. I also love the message of the healing power of nature.

Classic

Though I was familiar with this story because of the well known movies based on it, I had never read the book. This narration brought the story to life and cemented my belief that the book is ALWAYS better than the movie!

not like the movie-in a good way.

Possibly my new favorite book. I loved it so much. It is all happy feel good for the most part. There are, of course, antagonists and conflict; however, there are no dark and twisty parts like the movie version. I am guessing everyone knows what Heidi is about. A sweet little orphan girl (from age 5) raised by her grandfather who's the town outcast. He's a hermit living in the mountain. Heidi has lots of adventures and makes many friends and new family over the 5 or so years this book spans through her life 💕
