"Turning the envelope over, his hand trembling, Harry saw a purple wax seal bearing a coat of arms; a lion, an eagle, a badger and a snake surrounding a large letter 'H'."
Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

"A marriage made in heaven, Stephen Fry reading Harry Potter." (The Times)
I've never got to the Harry Potter books. I love the movies and the games, however I have never actually read the books. Therefore, I decided, that my first audiobook from Audible will be Phillosopher's Stone. It was captivating from start to finish, making my eyes literally water with some kind of nostalgia at some places. I don't think anyone else would have narrated it better than Stephen Fry. His amazing voice brings every character to life and creates an exquisite atmosphere throughout the whole story. Now I can't wait to buy the rest of the HP audiobooks!
I love audio books! From science to fiction, business to history. Stories, novels, fairytales, descriptions, guides, explanations, etc.
I was waiting for this for some time – and it was worth the waiting time!!! Wow!!! Stephen Fry lifts J.K.Rowlings fantastic Harry Potter to another dimension!!! Wow again!
This was my first Harry Potter experience and although quite late I still enjoyed a lot. I just love to shut the world outside off for few moments and go back to genuineness
I have never read the book, now questions of time and then interest. My young self thought that the movies were enough but when I grew up I realize that I was missing something.
Thank you for showing me what I was missing in the stories that I loved as movies.
I would listen to the book many times over, because of its place in the series, and the comfortable performance.
The story is light-hearted and highly enjoybale (though there is a chance that I'm blinded by nostalgia).
I have listened to the entire book within 24 hours of buy it and will probably do so again fairly soon.
Wow this took long enough! Amazing book and Stephen Fry is magnificent! Yes yes yes all round!
"Perfectly Fryed Potter"
If ever a series didn't need introducing it has to be J.K. Rowling's stunning Harry Potter! As soon as I saw this was available the only question on my mind was whether or not the narrator would do it justice. This is a big pair of reading glasses to fill!
Well, they only went and got Stephen Fry! He is superb! His voice fits Rowling's work to a tee and the story unfolds through his quintessential English being delivered with huge aplomb. Of course we do all know that this series grew in stature and maturity with its audience. There are tougher, longer books ahead of this one that have more of a cutting edge to them. So can he keep it up? Well based on this first volume there is little doubt in my mind that he will!
Potter fans can rest assured that this audiobook does Rowling's work full justice!
See you in Hogwarts!
"Been waiting to be able to hear this on my ipod"
The first of the Harry Potter series read by Stephen Fry - who else could tell these stories with such clarity and poise. I now have these recordings on cassette, cd and now for mp3/ipod. The more the listen the more you find in the characters and story telling - thank you JK for Harry.
"Fry gives magical performance."
Mr Fry does a superb reading of this enjoyable book. Really brought the books back to life for me.
"A must buy"
A famous book that is a must listen to. Great start to the 7 book series. Super voices
"150 Points to Gryffindor!"
Top quality from start to finish! A perfect listen for the winter months. Fry is brilliant as always.
I've always wanted to listen to these but they were too expensive on CD. Thank goodness for Audible. Stephen Fry is the perfect narrator for this series.
A modern classic, now my family can listen to Potter in the car, on the bus and at bedtime.
Yes! The story itself is magnificent and the narration by Stephen Fry is wonderful; it really brings the story to life. This is one of my favourite childhood series and to re-visit it again as an adult in audiobook form is simply magical! It is as wonderful to listen to now as it was to read for the first time as a child.
The Harry Potter series of books are incomparable to any other series of books I have ever read. They are closest possibly to JRR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings series.
Stephen Fry is, as always, stellar!
My favourite moment is when Harry arrives in Diagon Alley for the first time in his life.
My number 1 literary recommendation for children and adults alike.
Yes! This is my second time listening to this title, having also read it many many times. Stephen Fry is absolutely perfect. He portrays the characters so well; he is such a natural, much better than the terrible overacting in the films!
It's absolutely gripping. It really draws you in and is a great 'adventure'
I can't recommend this enough. Even if you have previously read the books, the audiobook versions are something absolutely magical.
So happy i can finally listen to this on audible. Had these on cassette years ago and loved every second of them. Stephen Fry is the most amazing narrator and could not have done a better performance. So happy.
