The Baker's Dozen
This is a book that loves children! It's a charming story filled with a delightful adventure. My children loved this book. We look forward to the sequel.
This is a children's book that adults will enjoy as well. Enright has an observant eye and ear for authentic children's speech and experience, making for a story that is cheerful and yes, escapist, but will make the listener wish he or she could have such adventures. This is a good book for a family car trip. The narrator is excellent.
We listened to this as part of a monthly book club and honestly I'm not sure we would have enjoyed it as much if I'd been the one reading. Certainly there are places where the time of the book comes into play and that did spark a couple of "girls can absolutely do that" comments from me, overall the book was a quick and engaging listen.
While the storyteller often had some rather annoying sounding voices I absolutely commend her for the ability to distinguish and handle so many different characters.
The story is very simple, but sweet and both my 9 and 6 year old boys enjoyed it. Often asking me to play one more chapter. If you are looking for an easy listen story that children of multiple ages May enjoy than I recommend GONE AWAY LAKE
This was really lame. Nothing happens except the kids meet some old people who tell them how great everthing used to be, and how kids today have pathetic lives. And this book was written in the 50's. The narrator gives a real overacted, emotional reading. NO plot, no interesting characters, just a lot of meandering.
"Highly recommended for all ages"
An excellent story when children were able tonroam and didn't have electronic gadgets to fill up their time. Mrs Blake is a mother who doesn't have any rile other than to be a wife and mother. All the children lead an outdoors active life. Best of all ate the elderly folk living a simple life
