Publisher's summary

When suburban Claudia Kincaid decides to run away, she knows she doesn't just want to run from somewhere; she wants to run to somewhere - to a place that is comfortable, beautiful, and preferably elegant. She chooses the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Knowing that her younger brother, Jamie, has money and thus can help her with the serious cash flow problem, she invites him along.

Once settled into the museum, Claudia and Jamie find themselves caught up in the mystery of an angel statue that the museum purchased at an auction for a bargain price of $250. The statue is possibly an early work of the Renaissance master Michelangelo, and therefore worth millions. Or is it? Claudia is determined to find out.

This quest leads Claudia to Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, the remarkable old woman who sold the statue, and to some equally remarkable discoveries about herself.

Critic reviews

"After reading this book, I guarantee that you will never visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art (or any wonderful, old cavern of a museum) without sneaking into the bathrooms to look for Claudia and her brother Jamie....Such is the impact of timeless novels...they never leave us. E. L. Konigsburg won the 1967 Newbery Medal for this tale." (Amazon.com review)

A Joy for the Whole Family!

A great book I was able to relisten to from childhood and share with my children. My 9 year old and 7 year old loved listening and finding out what happened next.

One of my favorites, well read

I have always loved this book, and recorded it for my nieces in the 80s. Jill Clayburgh is better. The story has all the hallmarks of its author, wit, truth, satire, an enjoyable picture o of the human condition. I wish there were more on Audible.

Car time = Family time

What did you love best about From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler?

This is a great book. I heard it in school from my teacher (an after lunch treat) and wanted to share it with my kids. We live in the car. While there are books on tape/cd that we could have used in the past, nothing makes listening easier than the Audible app. It remembers exactly where we stopped. So we are able to pick up without fiddling around trying to find the chapter. Using an FM transmitter, I'm able to play it through the car speakers so all of us can listen. My kids love books and are glued to hearing every word of books we listen to this way. Now car time isn't boring, wasted time, we are able to enjoy something together and I am able to share my love of this and may other children's books with them.

A Unique Story

This book is quirky and original (like most of Konigsburg's work). Claudia is a strong, smart young lady that both boys and girls can look up to, but she's also human and incredibly funny. A great little nugget of a book! “AUDIBLE 20 REVIEW SWEEPSTAKES ENTRY”

This book has always has been one of my favorites!

I read this when I was a child and was always fascinated by the story of running away to live in a museum. The adventure and wonder of it still sticks with me years later.

Enduring Classic

Read this as a kid in school and I love it just as much and likely more as I rediscovered it as an adult.

still a great and meaningful read

my grand daughter and I listened to this over the last word days. it had been a favorite of her step mother's, and although her life has been very different she was drawn to the story, identifying with many of Claudia ' s feelings and enjoying the adventure. I still had tears in my eyes during the last 20 minutes.
