I grew up watching Disney movies, so I was familiar with this story, but the book is, as is often the case, so much better. The story is similar, but much more believable, and although I knew the ending, I couldn't stop listening! I enjoyed the narrator - I thought the voices he did were good, I loved the different accents that were done. The book showed the prejudices of the time / era, and I liked that - Disney took all of that away. I recommend this book.
I saw the movie when I was a kid and fell in love with everything Witch Mountain. And come to my surprise some 25+ years later that the movie was originally a book. So of course I bought the book and enjoyed every minute of it. The narrator sucked me in and 4 hours later the only disappointment a had was that the book wasn't long enough. I would highly recommend this book!
We listened to this on a long car journey with my 9 year old son and he didn't want to get out of the car at any point and risk missing part of the story! He loves adventure stories and this falls firmly into that category. A great listen for kids and one parents will enjoy too.
This is surely an unfair review, but I downloaded this book expecting it to be like the movie I had seen as a kid (1975 version) and the more recent remake (2005). I did not realize how far those movies diverged from the original story written by Alexander Key.
If you are a listener who has read and liked the original written book this will likely be a satisfying (though fairly short) listen. The narration is well done. If you are expecting the movie I'd recommend passing on this one (or go read the book first to decide).
Just a woman with an unhealthy addiction to literature, the beach and a ice cold drink.
My little girl loved the story! My favorite as a little 80's kid too! n
Loved this story since the first time I read it. The voice work on this version is excellent, and the story holds up well, despite its age.
Having loved the film as a kid I was excited to read the book. It has met all my expectations and more. A great read for those who remember the films and people new to the story of Tia and Tony.
Unlike many sifi books this book does not show its age or require you to forget the date like space 1999 to 2001 a space odicy. There are few date specific references that would date this tale so Tia and Tony's story will always have been just last year...
I am an Australian woman who enjoys reading many different styles of books, from history to sci fi and mystery to poetry.
An interesting story for tweens
Narrator - The narrator does a good job. Not the greatest and not the worst. A few mispronunciations were irritating. But that may have been the "Americanisation" of the language, who knows.
The Story - I just didn't care. These kids could have dropped off the face of the earth for all I care and the priest was just annoying. Talking about the priest, his views were certainly very out of the ordinary for a devout catholic. In fact many of the characters were just odd, like fish out of water. I do not like it when an author uses character in such obvious plot devices. Having said all of that; this book is for tweens and they may enjoy it, but it wouldn't be the first book I would give them simply because of the clumsy literature that it is.
The book is not like the movie except that character names were used in the movie and that is the total extent of similarity between the two. So, if you are looking for that story in audio or print, this is not the book for you. If you want the original story, this is a decent listen. It is not great. It is not horrible. It is decent, though. I did not expect the book and movie to be the same, but the divergence here is so complete I'm surprised they bother to admit the connection. Not one of my favorite books but one I will probably listen to again sometime down the road.
