I really enjoyed the second book much more than the first. There are multiple plot twists and it is much faster paced than the first one also.

Expect the unexpected

The general premise and world building are done really well. Story could progress a little faster (book 1 was glacially slow, book 2 better). What ultimately killed this series for me was the characterization of literally ALL the adults. Not a single one of them were realistic in any way whatsoever. I expect the kids’ interpretation of other’s behavior to be un-nuanced and one dimensional … but every every single adult (both top side and below) having no ability to analyze why another person might do a thing? That’s just bad writing. Maybe the author has “reasons” that might become clear later, but it was bad enough for me to verbally “Nope” out of listening to any more of this story less than a quarter of the way through book 2. Seriously, ask my dog! And my wife.

I’ve listened to some amazing plus catalog stories and I’ve slogged through a ton of mediocre stuff. Minor plot holes, major plot holes, the occasional awful character(or multiple characters) construction (I finished Hardcore Hank for god sakes)… I’ve been able work past them and finish the series. This, however, is the first time I’ve ever shutdown a series before the resolution of even the smallest of it’s mysteries.

Honestly, I’m super disappointed because I think the core idea has truly deep possibilities, I just can’t get past the shallow characters.

Great story ruined by truly awful supporting character creation
